One of the most common misconceptions in veterinary medicine is assuming that a coughing dog with a heart murmur must be coughing because of heart disease.
The reality?
Many dogs with Myxomatous Mitral Valve Disease (MMVD) cough for reasons completely unrelated to their heart.
So how can we tell the difference?
๐น Cardiac related cough is usually associated with congestive heart failure and pulmonary edema. These patients often show additional signs such as tachypnea, increased resting respiratory rate, exercise intolerance, or respiratory distress.
๐น Non cardiac cough is frequently caused by respiratory diseases such as tracheal collapse, chronic bronchitis, bronchomalacia, airway inflammation, or infectious conditions. These dogs may have a loud, harsh, hacking cough that is often triggered by excitement, exercise, pressure on the neck, or changes in temperature.
โ A heart murmur tells us there is turbulent blood flow.
It does NOT automatically tell us why the patient is coughing.
Thatโs why thoracic imaging, echocardiography, and a thorough airway assessment are often necessary before concluding that the heart is responsible.
