The only problem is that after a trip this intense - in every possible sense - after this level of intellectual and physical overload that the Biennale brings, the brain and nervous system need at least a few days of complete silence. Funny enough, this year’s Biennale was actually Minor Keys. Now I understand why. But there’s no time for that. We keep moving. Brainstorm mode on.
After visiting both venues of the Venice Biennale, my puzzle finally came together. The Biennale is not about visual pleasure. It’s not an exhibition and certainly not a fair where art is bought and sold. It’s an international artopolitical event where every country has its own statement to make.
When people say the Biennale is about politics, it has nothing to do with who is friends with whom. It’s about what problems of modern humanity each country chooses to address.
The Japanese pavilion tackles the birth rate crisis. The Austrian pavilion turned into a sewage treatment plant: visitors urinate into a toilet, the urine flows through a filtration system into a giant aquarium where performers live in the water for hours. About what we are doing to the planet, to Venice, to nature.
At its core, the Biennale makes us think through art. Not just read about it, but physically live through the experience.
