Sometimes, there is a little #trashtalk in running! 😆 We’re thrilled to welcome back to the 2026 Vermont 100, this year as a Platinum Level Event Sponsor! 👏 Casella will be helping us keep Vermont green by providing dedicated dumpsters, bins, totes, and transport needs for trash 🚮 recycling ♻️ and composting 🌱. Their support lowers our overhead and ensures we can direct more funds to our beneficiary so that more people of all abilities and means can enjoy the outdoors and grow their confidence 🌻. Thank you, Casella, and we’ll see you all at Silver in July!

In this week’s episode of Runnah, I sit down with Amy Rusiecki, race director of the legendary Vermont 100 Endurance Race, to talk about one of the most important conversations happening in trail and ultra running right now: adaptive athlete inclusion.

We dive into the Vermont 100’s groundbreaking Athletes With Disabilities (AWD) program and how the race became one of the first trail ultras to officially recognize adaptive athletes in their own division. We also talk about Amy’s work with Vermont Adaptive Ski & Sports, what true accessibility in endurance sports can look like, and why building welcoming trail communities matters so much.

We also get into:

* Adaptive athletes in trail and ultra running
* The evolution of inclusion in endurance sports
* The Vermont 100 race culture and community
* Guiding visually impaired runners
* What race directors can do better for accessibility
* Why trail running should be for everybody
Spent Sunday out on scenic gravel roads with the Vermont 100 community.

I got to meet some truly wonderful humans, including members of Team Run 2 Empowerment, a group of Vermont 100 runners who fundraise for Vermont Adaptive as part of their journey to the start line. I learned more about visually impaired trail running, heard what it takes to ride a horse 100 miles, and got a glimpse into the community that makes this race so special.

Little edit coming soon, but for now, here’s a happy moment from the people behind the miles. 💚
Runners! Our latest runner email went out last Friday (5/15) — and it covers a lot — including sharing a blog post we wrote with an excerpt from Chuck Petersen’s book 📗 “Running Just for the Health of It”. Chuck (pictured) is a 10x finisher of the VT100 👏, racing between 1991-2006, and he graciously gave us permission to publish his words about being part of the early days of the event ⏪!

If you didn’t yet, please check out the full runner email via the link in our bio 🔗. We send these emails to help you have the best chance at success in your training and on race day. There are notes about qualifier and volunteer requirements; course changes; live timing; awards; parking & camping; a $35 athlete fundraising challenge to support our amazing partners; and info on our upcoming nutrition panel happening 6/3 with silver sponsor! + More! 💯

In 2015, we were fortunate to have Amy Rusiecki take over the helm of the Vermont 100, meaning this year marks 10 amazing years of her race directing. 💯👏🎉🥳

Please take a moment to read her reflections about this experience below and join us in celebrating her 10 year anniversary as our RD by making a donation in her honor to: LINK IN OUR BIO 🔗❤️

We promise, nothing would make Amy happier on race week than to see Vermont Adaptive receive a few more dollars to put toward getting kids, adults, and veterans affected by disabilities outside and having fun! ⛷️🚣🚵🏻‍♀️

“As I think back over the years, I am flooded with the memories of so many sweaty hugs, tears (of joy and pain), high fives to volunteers... And so much more. I have made incredible friends, and welcomed thousands of runners into the Vermont 100 family (and, my favorite part of greeting them across the finish line).

I also take pride in the ways that the VT100 has evolved over the years – including launching the adaptive athletes categories in 2017 and expanding on it in 2025. While other races are following our lead (and I welcome other RDs to adopt our rules!), I love that we were the first trail or ultra race that made this step forward!

I have guided a visually impaired athlete off the starting line of the Vermont 100 every year [since then]. Guiding athletes every year is the one time on race weekend where I get to take off my RD hat, and simply support a runner who I get to (hopefully) greet across the finish line later that day (or maybe the next morning). It’s an amazing opportunity to support an athlete as they take on the challenge of the Vermont 100!

At this year’s race, we have 6 adaptive athletes toeing the line and it happens to be that July is Disability Pride Month, which is timed to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which was signed into law in July 1990.”

💬💬💬

Amy, you’ve made the Vermont 100 and the world a more inclusive, accessible, and loving space, and we are forever grateful for your leadership. So here’s to your next 10 years! 🍻
