• One year ago today, the first stage of “shadow-work” (SHADOW#1) on the Otto von Bismarck monument in Tiergarten started.
Together with #ColonialNeighbours / we began with wrapping the entire statue with layers of blank paper. After one week the bronze surface was completely covered by a thin monochrome shell that awaited further transformation (image 1).
The next step was the visual overwriting of the statue symbolically echoing the memories of the arbitrary division of the African continent by the colonizing countries during the Berlin Conference in 1884/85 (image 2).
In the third week, the dried paper shell was cut open and taken down piece by piece (image 3 + 4). The process was accompanied by an artistic intervention by and Juan Pablo García Sossa (image 5): The phrase “Das Zentrum von Gestern, die Splitter von Heute” (Yesterday’s center, today’s splinters) was carved into the pathway.
Out of the laborious, intimate act of wrapping, tracing and mapping with brush and hand, new relations and new meanings emerged:
Malleable paper adheres to the unyielding surface of bronze, forming a bond, an attachment that does not cover up the figure underneath, but rather gives it a different visibility, allowing the visage of history to come forth in a new way.
Our communication team was discussing crucial questions with visitors at the monument:
– How can we commemorate from multiple perspectives? How can the violent history of colonialism be brought to light?
