An intensive workshop on self-construction and design through reuse, hosted in the Legler Cotton Factory, one of the largest industrial heritage sites in the area, now part of Vivarium | Fabbrica della Cultura, an experimental construction site.
The Vivarium project is currently in its construction phase, with demolition works underway and a dedicated material bank for storing recovered elements. These materials will become the primary design resource for the workshop, directly shaping the projects developed on site.
Participants will design and build furniture and spatial interventions using materials recovered directly from the demolition process.
The workshop will also mark the first public reopening of the site, with the outcomes contributing to the final arrangement of the spaces.
A hands-on experience focused on reuse, sustainability, and real construction processes.

The project reactivates the factory’s original space, once fragmented by partitions and suspended ceilings, introducing new openings that enhance visual and spatial connections.
Much of the demolition material is stored on site and selectively reused as construction components within the project, creating a reuse material bank.
Standard processes—removing suspended ceilings, dismantling partitions, and cutting new openings—become opportunities for circular material recovery.

The design approach follows principles of flexibility and minimal intervention: spaces are conceived to be easily adaptable and customizable to meet the needs of art and culture, doing “more with less” while prioritizing the reuse of the building and its existing materials.
An interpretation of the existing factory becomes key to uncovering new visual and spatial connections.

Vivarium, part of Fabbrica della Cultura —a large-scale example of industrial young heritage—acts as a pilot construction site conceived as a replicable model within a context of limited resources.
The project reactivates an underused area by enhancing the existing heritage in its “as found” qualities, applying an adaptive reuse strategy based on minimal interventions.
With a limited budget, this approach made it possible to redevelop up to twice the surface area compared to a conventional intervention.

How can a prefabricated warehouse be extended without changing its identity?
By working through minimal variations, in continuity with what already exists.
The concrete structure becomes lighter and shifts to steel; the column grid stays the same but is relocated. The precast beams turn into steel trusses, the columns become circular, and the glazing modules shape the facade while revealing the structure behind.
Each element follows its own independent logic, yet together they build a new continuity.
