By then, it was clear something was very wrong. Her parents, worried and out of options, made the decision to take her to the emergency room. What followed brought both answers and uncertainty. After evaluation, Maryn was diagnosed with nutcracker syndrome, a rare condition in which the left renal vein becomes compressed between two arteries.
At first, her doctors had few treatment options and prescribed pain medication to help her manage daily life. She later underwent renal vein transposition, a procedure that repositions the compressed vein. Unfortunately, the surgery was not successful, and her pain eventually returned.
Maryn began to feel like no one truly wanted to help her, and she was starting to lose hope. Then a friend who had faced the same diagnosis told her about the amazing experience and successful autotransplant she had received from UW Health. Maryn reached out to our transplant team and finally found the help she was looking for. A year after her unsuccessful vein transposition, she underwent a renal autotransplant at UW Health. During the procedure, her care team removed her left kidney and repositioned it near her right hip, giving her a renewed chance at relief.
Today, Maryn is pursuing a medical career, and for her senior project, she chose to write and illustrate a children’s book about nutcracker syndrome. “I didn’t realize how hard it was on my mental health, being in so much pain,” she said. “I hadn’t really felt happy in a long time. But I was happy after surgery, and I want to help other people.”
A few years ago, her nursing family tree extended into her marriage when her husband became a nurse. Dre Williams was a defensive lineman for the Wisconsin Badgers football team in 2002 and 2003. He was frequently injured during his college career, undergoing more than 20 surgeries during his playing days and in the years that followed. The compassionate care he received, along with his wife’s encouragement, inspired him. He became a nurse and now works in chemotherapy services, where he’s spent the past two years supporting patients through some of their most difficult moments.
Married for 17 years Jenn and Dre balance their roles as nurses and parents to two kids with teamwork that extends beyond the hospital. Jenn works the overnight shift, and Dre has the day shift, so their flexible nursing schedules allow them quality time with their kids, though their time together can be limited.
“I sometimes wait for him on the bench outside the hospital as he comes in for a shift and I am going, our own nursing handoff,” says Jenn. “It takes a lot of coordination and teamwork to be a nurse, a spouse and a parent.”
During National Nurses Week, we celebrate their shared commitment, resilience and respect that define not only their family, but the nursing profession as a whole.
After being diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in 2019, she struggled to keep her blood sugar stable. She started using an insulin pump right away but still went to sleep every night worried she wouldn’t notice when her blood sugar got dangerously low. Several friends (a group she dubbed her “emergency response team”) were connected to her glucose monitor so they could keep track of her from a distance.
Rachael’s endocrinologist referred her to the UW Health Pancreas Transplant Program, where she met with a transplant coordinator and learned about the criteria necessary to be a transplant candidate. “I really thought you had to be on your deathbed to get any kind of transplant,” she says. “But I was within range of the initial criteria. All my other organs were in great condition. I told the transplant coordinator that I want this transplant so I can I keep my other organs healthy in the future.”
Now, she’s back to work and she says she’s never felt better. She even started an eight-week-long walk-run program to get her strength back.
Had an awesome time connecting with Badger alum and pharmacist Carin Bouchard to learn more about the healthcare field.”
Through UW Health Transplant Center’s new Original Organ Project, Xavier became the first pediatric heart transplant recipient to participate in a native heart viewing ceremony.
“It still amazes me,” Deidre says. “UW Health gave me my three miracles.”
Her journey began with unanswered questions about her irregular cycles and a diagnosis of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)—one of the most common causes of infertility. It ended with expert care from Dr. Laura Cooney, a nationally recognized PCOS and reproductive endocrinology specialist, and a fertility clinic that made her feel supported, understood and genuinely hopeful.
People ask me why I haven’t quit. The truth is, I’m not walking away from something I love without giving it everything I have.
