Conner has more than five decades of experience in the nuclear industry with the U.S. Department of Energy and the National Nuclear Security Administration. Congratulations to our Grand Challenge Scholar Graduates! 🎓 👏 The NAE Grand Challenge Scholars Program is an international initiative established by the National Academy of Engineering to prepare engineering students to tackle some of the world's most pressing challenges.

Through the program, #EngineeringVols gain experience in research, interdisciplinary coursework, entrepreneurship, global awareness, and social responsibility while connecting their technical education to real-world needs. Each received a medallion to wear at commencement, along with a letter from the President of the NAE.

Senior MAE #EngineeringVol Alex Ballard wasn’t always sure he wanted to become a pilot like his father. But after seeing a flyover performed by former #EngineeringVols, Ballard was inspired to pursue the path.

Now, Ballard will graduate this week with a degree in mechanical engineering before immediately joining the Wisconsin Air National Guard to begin training with the 115th Fighter Wing. He has earned a pilot slot and will train to fly the F-35 Lightning II aircraft.

Preparing to cross the stage at commencement this week, senior BME #EngineeringVol Sai Rangoon balances her work as a co-op at Siemens Healthineers and serving as treasurer of 🩺 But as a child in her hometown of Hyderabad, India, Rangoon discovered her passion for Kuchipudi, a classical Indian dance.

In high school, Rangoon discovered a passion for medical research. She realized biomedical engineering would allow her to combine her love of physics and mathematics with the medical field, integrating physically intuitive ideas with science.

8 years ago, #EngineeringVol Emma Houston arrived at UT with a clear vision of her future: explore a career involving science and government policy. Houston knew UT’s Department of Nuclear Engineering could help her accomplish her educational goals and grow as a person.

This week, Houston will take part in the doctoral hooding ceremony for completing her PhD in nuclear engineering, following the completion of her bachelor’s degree in 2022 and her master’s degree in 2023.
