area head for media production and assistant professor Miguel Alvarez gave students a valuable, hands-on learning experience through his newly released short film, “Piojo”. Filmed at Robert Rodriguez’s Troublemaker Studios in East Austin, the production allowed students to work in a professional setting, contributing to various aspects of filmmaking. Students in RTF audio area head and assistant professor of practice Korey Pereira’s class also contributed to the short film’s sound design, capturing audio in real time using Moody Equipment Checkout’s new Blackbird sound cart.

“I wanted this to be an experience of what it’s really like to work on a professional set,” Alvarez said. “Here are the expectations, here’s how fast things move, here’s how things connect. I just wanted to take advantage of all the energy and creativity of the students because I get set into my ways. It’s a great opportunity to take in ideas from students and feed off their energy.”

In the spring 2026 semester, radio-television-film students had the opportunity bring their comedy sketches to life.

From script to live taping, students enrolled in RTF professor and department chair Cindy McCreery’s writers’ room course collaborated with peers from RTF assistant professor of practice David Schneider’s production class to develop “Saturday Night Live”-style sketches. Students also had the chance to hear from former SNL writer Jim Downey, who stopped by the class to share behind-the-scenes stories from his time working on the iconic late-night show.
