Meet Wasiq Javed, a Houston native who came to Texas Law with his wife, Sumaya 🤘

Wasiq and Sumaya met at the University of Houston, got married in 2020, and were both admitted to the Class of 2026 at Texas Law. "It has been an incredible experience doing this journey together. With our own unique pathways and interests, I get to learn from my wife's different clinics and internships while also enjoying taking classes and attending law school events together!"

At Texas Law, Wasiq served as director of finance for the Muslim Legal Society, a staff editor for the Review of Litigation Journal, and a judicial intern to the Honorable Senior U.S. District Judge David A. Ezra.

His favorite Texas Law moment? The Muslim Legal Society's Annual Community Iftar Dinner. "I truly enjoy the opportunity to break fast during the holy month of Ramadan with my fellow friends, classmates, faculty, and staff. The event is a special occasion to bring people together of different backgrounds for meaningful conversations and reflection."

His advice for incoming 1Ls? "Have faith in the process and never give up. It takes courage, grit, and resilience to overcome the challenges of law school, and it will all get easier and pay off in the long run!"

Congratulations, Wasiq! We're so proud of you 🧡🤘

How do you build trust with someone who's spent years in isolation?

For Camila Mosier-Giovine, it starts with a simple question: "Can we speak in Spanish?"

Over the past three years, she's interned with the Federal Public Defender's Office and the ACLU's Capital Punishment Project, working directly with men on death row. In one case, she met with a death row inmate who was known to be reluctant to speak. She asked if they could speak in Spanish, creating a space that felt familiar rather than institutional. That moment of empathy led him to open up and share his story.

"Considering that many of these men spend up to 23 hours a day in isolation, their legal teams are often their only connection to the outside world. Providing a sense of familiarity, even briefly, can help restore a sense of humanity within a system that often takes it away."

Camila is heading to Texas Defender Service, where she'll continue defending individuals sentenced to mandatory life without parole and fighting wrongful convictions.

Congratulations, Camila! We can't wait to see what you do next 🧡🤘

Happy Mother’s Day🧡

This Mother’s Day, we’re highlighting Olivia and Megan, Class of 2026, who navigated law school as mothers.
Olivia gave birth right before her 3L year. Megan had her third daughter during finals week of her 3L fall. Yesterday, they both graduated from Texas Law 🤘

Olivia Vaughn: “Becoming a mother during law school taught me that life is really what you make it. The world is not going to slow down or rearrange itself to make things easier. You learn to meet it where it is. You figure it out. You keep going.”

Most of her schoolwork happened in the margins—during naps, after bedtime, in small windows of time she learned not to waste.

“I hope my son grows up and sees this year as proof that he can do hard things. That even when something feels overwhelming, it is still possible to keep going.”

Megan Ezekannagha: Megan had her third daughter during finals week. “She ended up being my lucky charm. In the weeks after she was born, I finished a paper that I eventually published.”

She often gets asked how she “does it all.”

“Honestly, I never really know how to answer because we just do. You make room for what matters, and there is always space for more children, more love, and more purpose in life.”

“I hope my daughters know that hard things are worth doing and that family and professional goals do not have to compete with one another.”

Congratulations, Olivia and Megan. And Happy Mother’s Day to all the Texas Law moms 🧡🤘

CPA to Texas Law to Sidley Global Finance 🤘

Lily Li spent five years at PwC before coming to Texas Law. "I observed lawyers in my practice group solve complex issues, which made me intensely curious about the legal profession."

At Texas Law, she served as administrative editor on Texas Law Review, overseeing finances, fundraising, and major events for a journal with over 100 years of history.

"The biggest thing I've learned is the importance of open communication with my team and to anticipate upcoming events and deadlines months in advance."

Her advice for incoming students? "Create a schedule and stick to it! The students who thrive academically and personally are the ones who are disciplined about their time but also set aside space for guilt-free time with friends and family."

After the Sunflower Ceremony, she's heading to Sidley's Global Finance team in Dallas.

Congratulations, Lily! Texas Law is lucky to have you 🧡🤘

The new building will sit directly across from the law school with 300+ beds, a café, gym, library-style reading room, and two roof decks, all designed to give law students unmatched value, community, and proximity to campus. Opening August 2028.
