Haircuts with sensory processing disorder are hard! There's so much you don't see behind this one haircut session! But with brother by her side, she always manages to do it. It's the comfort and warmth in his love that sees the struggles she has. Just a little kindness can do wonders for everyone!
Raising two children with Down syndrome has taught me that their value isn't measured by milestones, achievements, or how closely they fit society's expectations. Their value is found in their ability to love deeply, show compassion freely, and bring joy wherever they go.

A space becomes inclusive when people of all abilities are welcomed, supported, participating, and belonging together.
If people with and without disabilities aren't learning, working, socializing, and building relationships together, we need to ask whether we're creating inclusion or simply creating separate spaces.

Haircuts with sensory processing disorder are hard! There's so much you don't see behind this one haircut session!
You don't see years of heartbreak watching your child cry so much,almost fainting at facing something so simple to many of us.
What you don't see before this is talking about this day, about her haircut for many days, at breakfast, at dinner, just to ease her into it.
You don't see us holding her down to brush her hair while she screams so hard, her brother gets scared and teary-eyed, not knowing how to help her.
Kids like her with sensory issues struggle with many personal care tasks like brushing hair. My daughter with Down Syndrome dislikes having her hair brushed, washed, or even touched. There is lots of crying and yelling while brushing. I have used many different products or brushes but it is still a struggle.
With time and practice, she has gotten better. Wet hair brush and tangle free spray has helped. I just try to use my fingers to loosen her tangles.
Sensory Reasons for Hair Struggles:
**Your vestibular system controls your body’s sense of balance and motion, so some kids are sensitive to having their head tilted backward or forward.
**Many children with sensory issues have very sensitive scalps or are sensitive to touch in general from hands, brushes or combs, and even water.
**Some kids struggle with sound of clippers or feeling water
Here are some tips we tried:
**When you’re brushing, hold onto a strip of hair above any tangle so that child doesn’t feel tugging as you pull tangle loose.
**Use a hairbrush with soft bristles. They should have rounded head to make it comfortable.
**If knots in hair, use a detangling spray. This will help with discomfort of knots being combed out.
**Use firm, downward motion. Avoid using light strokes.
**Detangle with fingers or encourage child to brush themselves.

My daughter with Down Syndrome loves birthday parties. She sings the birthday song as soon as she hears its someone's birthday. She has attended many family birthdays but like many other kids with disabilities, often gets left out of school birthday party invitations for various reasons.
"If there’s a disabled student in your child’s class, please don’t overlook them. You might assume they can’t attend a party due to mobility or behavioural issues. Maybe you think there’s a safety risk or that inviting this child adds responsibility to you as the host. Fair enough. But before you exclude them, consider asking the parent to come along to assist their child. I would say yes in a heart beat if a parent asked me to come along to a party venue to supervise and alleviate any responsibility for the parent" (averybrightlife)
