Students from Seaway District High School were among the first to experience the new Black History Program at, an interactive exhibit running throughout February.

Grade 7 and 8 students explored local Black history through engaging displays that highlight the lives and contributions of notable local individuals. Among them were Victoria Lewis, Cornwall’s first Black school teacher, and Isaac Johnson, a former enslaved man who went on to become a Master Stone Mason in Eastern Ontario.

The exhibit covers important themes including Slavery, Integration and Segregation, and the Underground Railway, giving students a deeper understanding of both the challenges and achievements of Black Canadians in the region.

The program is welcoming more students throughout Black History Month, with Iroquois Public School and North Dundas District High School also scheduled to visit. These visits offer students the chance to connect with history in their own communities and reflect on the enduring impact of these pioneers.
Honouring Black History Month: Meet Private John Cosley!

Today we continue to share the stories of the local Black community in the 1860s, right here in what was once Upper Canada. This month, we’re celebrating Black History, Black Heritage, and Black Achievement as we shine a spotlight on the remarkable Black figures.

Introducing Private John Cosley – a man of many talents and endless innovation. Born in the United States circa 1835, Cosley's journey led him to Iroquois, Ontario, where he left a great mark on history.

As a Black barber, poet, inventor, and entrepreneur, Cosley's legacy shines brightly. During the Fenian Raids of 1866, he bravely served as a Private First Class in the Dundas Militia, defending his community with unwavering courage. But that was just the beginning...

Cosley then moved his business to Oakville, Ontario and advertised himself as a "barber, hairdresser, proprietor of Indian root shrub, toys, land gunsmith." He became a beacon of creativity and ingenuity. Not only did he excel as a barber and hairdresser, but he also delved into the world of invention, patenting a groundbreaking breech-loading rifle.

Cosley also gained notoriety as the editor of The Bee, a newspaper that he printed on a hand press that he made himself.

As we celebrate Black History, let's remember and honour pioneers like Private John Cosley – trailblazers who defied the odds, shattered barriers, and left an enduring legacy for generations to come. Join us in paying tribute to his remarkable achievements and the rich diverse fabric of Black heritage that enriches our past, present, and future.

We're grateful to the members of the Black community, both locally and province-wide, who made invaluable contributions to allow us to share these stories and the creation of our new permanent Black History exhibit at Crysler Hall.
