The glory of two kshetrams, two forms in one.
Sri Annamacharya, along with Varkari devotees depicted at the bottom of the artwork, extols the Lord of Tirumala as the same One who stands on a brick in Pandharpur.
Here He is, sporting Vitthala’s tilakam and fish earrings, yet also bearing white camphor on the chin. Clad in vastrams and abharanams that seem to carry a memory of their own, He gathers the marks of both forms in one.
Adorning garlands and wielding ayudhas with the same grace, He stands on the humble brick that one can’t help but see as no different from the great Venkatadri hill itself.

Akhilandeshwari was said to have had some ugram in her form at Thiruvanaikaval. Her vibrance, raw energy was too intense for any human to withstand. When Adi Shankaracharya came to the temple, the people of the town implored him to help them receive Her energy at the appropriate intensity. Adi Shankara installed an image of Ganesha just opposite Her shrine. The Mother’s gaze upon Her beloved son invoked Her maternal love and eased the ugram to an extent. Then he installed the Sri Chakram as her Tatankas (earrings), essentially recognizing and venerating Her as Shiva’s eternal Shakti, by which She assumed Her benign form in which She is worshipped even today. Just how beautiful is that ❤️! Note that there is no Kalyana utsavam held in the temple, for Akhilandeshwari abides here as a young disciple and Jambukeshwara, the Guru. The acharyas of the Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham uphold the tradition of ceremonially reinstalling the earrings when they wear with time. The Tatanka Pratishta tradition continues to gently subdue Devi’s ugram by affirming Akhilandeshwari as Shiva’s eternal counterpart through a union that transcends ritual.
Even today, many bhaktas believe the darshanam of AmbaL adorned with these Tatankas removes obstacles in material and more importantly, spiritual pursuits.

कामाक्षि तावक कटाक्षमतङ्गजेन्द्र: ॥ The poet compares the gleaming pearls of Mother Kamakshi’s earrings to the bright white tusks of a majestic elephant that is her sidelong glance. The mahout riding the elephant is Her very grace and mercy. The poet prays for this elephant, Her kataksham, driven by the mahout of Her grace, to uproot all misery. च्छायाभरेण जगतां परितापहारी
ताट्ङ्करत्नमणितल्लजपल्लवश्रीः।
कारुण्यनाम विकिरन्मकरन्दजालं
कामाक्षि राजति कटाक्षसुरद्रुमस्ते ॥ In this verse, the poet declares Mother Kamakshi’s sidelong glance is the wish-yielding Kalpataru tree whose cooling shade removes all sorrow. The leaves of this tree are the radiance from her gem-studded ear-rings. The nectar of its flowers is Her compassion. May we always receive the coolness and fragrance of Her compassion from the Kalpataru of Her kataksham. Verses from the Kataksha Shatakam of Mooka Panchashathi, by Mooka Kavi, who later became the 20th pontiff of the Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham.
