Honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice
Hospitality grad Jennifer Nunez describes her time at UNLV as unforgettable. Taking advantage of opportunities in the hospitality mentor program and the student club Runway Rebelz, Jennifer learned industry insights from professionals while Runway Rebelz provided an outlet to express her love of fashion. Together with her work as a content creator for UNLV marketing and branding, Jennifer’s experience at UNLV has helped prepare her for a career in hospitality marketing.

Favorite experience as a Rebel: “Premier is my favorite because it brings everyone together. It’s such a fun experience with friends and enjoying music. It truly feels like UNLV’s own Coachella. I just love it because it's a good way to start the semester before the craziness begins.”

What she’ll miss the most: “Taking long walks on campus, appreciating the changing seasons, spending time with classmates, and finding every excuse to get a sweet treat.”

Advice to students: “We sometimes forget that we don't have to go through college alone. There are resources and people here to help us. It's so important to build a network and community of people because you never know when you might end up working with somebody, especially in Vegas. It's such a small city. Everybody knows each other. It's so important just to treat everyone with kindness and learn to build a community because that can really take you a long way.”

BTS returns to Las Vegas as part of their world tour, and just as the k-pop furor touches down in the city, a new student organization takes center stage at UNLV.

K-Pop Club (unlvkpop_official) is the latest addition to UNLV’s 400+ student organizations, offering a space for students to meet, share their love for K-pop, try dance choreography, and create community around a shared interest.

“Even if you’re just starting out, or just looking for friends, it’s a really welcoming space,” said member Minjun Alejandrino.

K-pop has been on the rise since the early 1990s with groups like Seo Taiji and Boys, one of the first K-pop acts to blend rap and dance. The genre-blending music uses bold visuals from fashion to staging to capture audiences, but the biggest draw is the choreography.

“The choreography is what pulls people in. It’s high-energy, and the patterns are really creative,” says K-Pop Club member Devon Alvizo. “Organizing Random Dance Play and performances is fun, but getting everyone in sync is a real puzzle.”

Even as an undergraduate student, Ana Vargas (left) knew that her passion for education would open doors to a world of possibilities. The two-time #UNLVGrad hopes to use her M.A. in urban leadership to improve access and equity in higher education. “Every child in Las Vegas should have the same tools to pursue higher ed if they wish to,” Vargas shares.

What she’ll miss most: “I will miss the access to brilliant minds and their lectures. I found a lot of joy in learning new things and delving deep into policy issues in our city.”

Advice to students: “Don't rush through your coursework, and take the opportunity you have to spend your time THINKING. It is a wonderful time in one's life to spend time thinking critically and learning new concepts. Read all assigned reading. Don't take shortcuts!”

If he could, Roger Lokakao would teach a course on how to DJ. After all, the #UNLVGrad is no stranger to the entertainment world, having spent time at UNLV as a member of championship-winning Rebel Girls and Company. Lokakao earned his Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology this spring, with plans to inform others about personal healthcare and take on any opportunities that come his way.

Favorite memory: “The Rebel Girls and Company Dance Team – we won 2 titles this year at the UDA College National Championship to defend our D1A Hip Hop and Gameday Championships.”

What he’ll miss the most: “I will miss the community that is not just UNLV but Las Vegas as a whole.”

Advice to students: “Challenge yourself to join organizations, connect with people, and network. You never know who you can meet from the classroom to a random school event!"

During spring commencement, we honored six students as outstanding graduates! As researchers, advocates, policymakers, and trailblazers, these Rebels will have a lasting impact on the communities they serve:

🎓Slide 1: Gare Ambrose-Igho, Ph.D. in Geoscience |
Gare spent her graduate career looking for solutions in water scarcity — and along the way earned awards, scholarships, and a 3.9 GPA. Her research explores groundwater flow and uses math to combat food insecurity by mapping well locations and predicting future water availability and agricultural irrigation needs. The award-winning work is focused on her home country Nigeria and its fast-growing neighbor Niger. Her ultimate goal is to spur international cooperation in managing precious water resources to help alleviate human suffering.

Gare was selected for a Nevada Gold Mines fellowship to map well sites, analyze groundwater samples, and collaborate on an interactive museum exhibit. She balanced academics with leadership and service for organizations like the African Student Alliance and Association for Women Geoscientists. Gare recently took her talents to the Texas Water Development Board, where she’s working as a hydrologist looking for ways to solve water scarcity challenges.

🎓Slide 2: Zachary Diaz, B.S. in Biology |
Zachary Diaz’ clinical experiences, research involvement, and service demonstrate a consistent commitment to improving human health. Graduating this spring with an impressive 3.96 GPA, Zachary earned the 2026 NV Centennial Medallion for academic, service, and leadership excellence; multiple NSF scholar awards; and a NASA-funded neuroscience internship.

Zachary is also a Red Cross volunteer and Guam native who returned home after a recent super typhoon to help displaced families. He has worked as a clinical research assistant in the University Medical Center’s ER, gathering data aimed at improving emergency medicine, and supports pharmacy operations for Nellis Air Force Base as a clinical volunteer. His award-winning research on restoring eye function is expected to be integral to the eventual journal publication of his lab team’s work.

After returning to the classroom as a non-traditional student, #UNLVGrad Glenda Ordonez is graduating with her Master of Hospitality Administration and was selected as one of UNLV's commencement speakers this spring. She describes this as an honor that reflects her belief that it’s never too late to pursue new goals and rediscover your voice.

First impression: “My first impression of UNLV was how diverse, welcoming, and full of opportunity it felt. As a returning graduate student balancing work, family, and academics, I initially felt nervous about stepping back into the classroom after many years. But over time, UNLV became a place where I rediscovered confidence, purpose, and a deeper passion for learning.”

Favorite memory: “One of my most meaningful experiences at UNLV has been being selected as a Graduate Commencement Speaker. With the ceremony taking place on May 15, it will be both an exciting and deeply meaningful moment for me. This opportunity represents not only academic achievement but also perseverance, growth, and the journey of returning to graduate school later in life while balancing work, family, and personal responsibilities. It serves as a reminder that growth and new beginnings are possible at any stage of life.”

What she’ll miss most about UNLV: “I will miss the sense of growth, connection, and shared purpose that comes from being part of a diverse learning community. UNLV challenged me academically, but it also reminded me that it is never too late to evolve, rediscover your voice, and pursue new goals.”
