Today, we recognize the strength and resilience of those living with multiple sclerosis (MS), and the families, caregivers, and care teams who support them every day.

We asked three of our experts at the BARLO MS Centre to share their insights and answer some common questions about multiple sclerosis.

At the BARLO MS Centre at St. Michael’s Hospital, a dedicated, multidisciplinary team continues to deliver leading-edge care, research, and education—working together to improve outcomes and advance understanding of MS.

St. Michael’s Hospital has officially opened its new and expanded Slaight Family Emergency Department — now spanning nearly an entire city block and among the largest and busiest emergency departments in Toronto.

The Honourable, Ontario’s Deputy Premier and Minister of Health, joined the team to celebrate the grand opening yesterday. Built with equity, safety, and community needs in mind, the redesigned space optimizes layout, enhances privacy, and improves patient flow — helping create a smoother and more welcoming experience for all.

“We want to do everything we can to ensure our patients’ experiences are as smooth and welcoming as possible, and this new space makes that easier for everyone,” said Dr. Steve Lin, Chief of Emergency Medicine at St. Michael’s Hospital.

This milestone reflects the power of partnership — bringing together hospitals, frontline teams, government, and generous donors to advance more compassionate care and better outcomes for patients.

Thank you to the Honourable, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health, for joining St. Michael’s Hospital to mark the official opening of the new BMO Ambulatory Care Area in The Slaight Family Emergency Department.

As one of only two adult level 1 trauma centres in Canada that is accredited by the American College of Surgeons, our emergency department is one of the busiest and most complex in the country. Now spanning nearly an entire city block, the new space helps reduce crowding and shorten wait times by streamlining care for people who do not need a hospital bed. It also helps patients receive safer, faster, and high-quality care from the moment they arrive.

“Thank you to the incredible team at St. Michael’s Hospital and to the amazing healthcare workers at Unity Health Toronto and across our city for your dedication, your compassion and the tremendous impact you have on people’s lives every day,” said Minister Jones.

This is the latest investment from the Ontario government, in addition to:

✅ Over $1 billion to support the redevelopment and expansion of St. Joseph’s Health Centre, including the construction of a new state-of-the-art patient care tower.
✅ More than $11 million in critical infrastructure updates across Unity Health Toronto.
✅ $15 million to support the relocation of the NICU at St. Michael’s to connect critically ill newborns and their families to specialized care.

“Progress happens through partnership — between hospitals, frontline teams, government and generous donors all working toward the same goal: better compassionate care and better outcomes for patients. Today’s announcement reflects that shared commitment,” said Altaf Stationwala, President and CEO of Unity Health Toronto.
A special shout out to our Providence Healthcare volunteers, who go above and beyond for everyone who comes through our doors.

We celebrated their longstanding commitment to the Providence community at this year’s Volunteer Service Milestone Awards Ceremony.

Thank you to all our volunteers for the compassion and dedication you bring to our patients, residents, families, and staff each and every day.
A new photo exhibit titled Within the Highs and Lows: Young and Type 1, offers a powerful glimpse into the daily realities of young adults navigating life with a chronic condition — from the excitement of independence to the constant, often invisible demands of managing their health.

These are a few of the images – along with a quote from each photographer – that will be on display as part of the exhibit.

Co-led by researchers at St. Michael’s Hospital and young adults living with type 1 diabetes, the exhibit features more than 30 intimate, raw, and deeply personal images captured by the participants themselves. Together, they tell stories of vulnerability and resilience that define life with this condition.

Research at Unity Health Toronto is pushing the boundaries of what's possible. And it starts with our graduate trainees – the Master’s and PhD students, and postdoctoral fellows, poised to solve healthcare’s most pressing challenges.

Yesterday, the Research Training Centre's Research Day 2026 brought together over 170 of them, alongside judges, speakers, and supporters, at the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute for a full day of scientific exchange and celebration. Dr. Kamran Khan, scientist, infectious disease physician, and founder and CEO of BlueDot, challenged trainees to think boldly and embrace innovation.

Throughout the day, trainees showcased their research through oral and poster presentations, culminating in recognition of the outstanding work across our training programs.

Thank you to every trainee who presented, and to our judges, session chairs, speakers, and volunteers.

Here’s what they told us…
We’re excited to share that Unity Health Toronto hospitals are among the best in Canada, according to Newsweek Magazine’s World’s Best Hospitals 2026 list.

The annual rankings recognize leading hospitals worldwide, as well as the top organizations per country, and this is the 7th straight year St. Michael’s has landed in the top 10 in Canada.

“The commitment of our clinicians, researchers and staff to excellence, innovation, and system partnership – with our mission and values at our core – is what got us here. As we celebrate this moment, we’re also looking to the future and reaffirming our dedication to high quality care for all,” says Altaf Stationwala, President and CEO.

St. Michael’s ranked 6th in Canada and St. Joseph’s placed among the top 10 community teaching hospitals in Ontario. Providence, one of Ontario’s largest post-acute hospitals, was not on the list as Newsweek doesn’t include specialized rehabilitation in these rankings.
