THERE’S MORE THAN CORN IN INDIANA…

Indiana Beach! Established in 1926, the family-friendly amusement park celebrates its 100th year in 2026! Begun as a small lakeside beach and refreshment stand by Earl Spackman, Indiana Beach has become a quintessential piece of growing up in the Hoosier state. It’s so synonymous with the state that it even got a shoutout on Stranger Things!

Do you have any fond memories of Indiana Beach?

Kurt Vonnegut gave us 14 novels, 6 plays, and a galaxy of short stories—each one charged with that unmistakable Hoosier spark and populated by unforgettable characters like Malachi Constant and Kilgore Trout.

Born and raised in Indianapolis, a Shortridge grad, and a WWII POW, Vonnegut wrote with a blend of kindness, pacifism, and wry wonder that still hits hard today.

He left us in 2007, and let’s be honest—he’d probably have some sharp words about the state of the world. But he’d also find a way to look at 2025 with his trademark hope and humanity.

After all, he reminded us: “There is love enough in this world for everybody, if people will just look.”

To honor him, we have our very own tee -- available in-store or online at the link in our bio.

If you grew up in Northern Indiana, you probably remember Penguin Point.
The first one opened in Wabash back in 1950, and for decades it was more than a fast‑food stop — it was a piece of home.

By the 2000s, the familiar signs started disappearing, and in 2023 the last locations closed for good. An era quietly ended, but the memories are still very much alive!

Tweet, tweet! 🐦 Today we celebrate National Bird Day by taking time to appreciate these special creatures. While you can spot a great number of birds in Indiana, one of our favorites is our state bird the cardinal. Chosen to be the state bird back in 1933, you can spot them year-round in the Hoosier state.

If you’re into birding (and who isn’t), hotspots around Indiana include Eagle Creek Park, Indiana Dunes State Park, Muscatatuck National Wildlife Refuge, Celery Bog and Pokagon State Park.

You can also celebrate these winged creatures with our Backyard Birds of the Midwest Tee. Shop in-store or online at the link in our bio.

WHAT’S BIG, ROUND, AND COVERED IN THOUSANDS OF COATS OF PAINT?

If you said the World’s Largest Ball of Paint in Alexandria, Indiana you’d be right! We here at USI love discovering Indiana oddities and we couldn’t pass up sharing this Hoosier icon. Created in 1977 when local resident Mike Carmichael and his son began covering a baseball in house paint, you could say that the unique hobby soon became too big to handle, and Mike had to build the ball of paint its own barn.

Today the ball has more than 27,000 coats of paint on it and weighs about 2 ½ tons. Have you ever visited the World’s Largest Ball of Paint?

HOOSIER LEGENDS: The Veal Family

Proof that happy accidents can turn into iconic traditions, an ice-covered tree is one of central Indiana’s favorite winter landmarks.

First created in 1961, Veal’s Ice Tree was a serendipitous development after Vierl Veal attempted to make a sledding hill for his children. After spraying a mist of water on a hill, a change in wind direction caused the mist to soak a few bushes, thus giving birth to the family’s first ice tree. After recreating the spectacle yearly, it soon became an attraction that nearby folks made the trip to visit and admire.

Since then the Veal family has taken it upon themselves to continue the tradition of building the ice tree, and as the tree grew in size and wonder, so did the crowds of people coming to check it out. In an average year the tree grows somewhere between 35 and 40 feet, but in 2014 it grew to an estimated 80 feet!

Located at 6445 Mimosa Lane in Indy, it’s a must-see for any Hoosier. In the words of the Veal Family, the tree is “always free to see...free of fees, drama, politics, judgement, and pressure. It is full of wonder, art and science.”
