When it's your toddler's first time seeing dolphins, and yet it's mam and dad who lose their sh*t ๐Ÿ™ˆ๐Ÿคฃ

Forget the saying "scarleh for your ma and da", it's now "scarleh for your toddler" ๐Ÿคฃ

A huge thanks to the very lovely Isaac from who are so incredibly respectful towards nature and wildlife, and allowed us the time to enjoy it all without being in any way invasive. We cannot recommend this wonderful gentleman enough (he also gave us a great price!)

No matter which town you stay in on Lake Atitlan, you will be inundated with mentions to hike Rostro Maya for sunrise (more popularly advertised as the Indian Nose hike).

And while a clear, cloudless morning is never guaranteed, this short, relatively easy and affordable hike is absolutely worth your time!

We originally wanted to do this without a tour. And many do. But with research comes whispers of local bandits who tend to rob tourists along the trail. Don't get us wrong, bandits and robberies are a fact around the lake, but in this case - these 'bandits' are instead local farmers, sporting machetes, who approach foreign visitors demanding payment to cross their private land which is fair enough!

Considering these 'fees' can add up, with no fixed rate, it is much cheaper and less stress to just book that group trip. Especially when it only costs roughly 100-150Q (โ‚ฌ10-โ‚ฌ17).

On great recommendation, we booked a slightly more expensive tour (who even are we?!) with a local guide called Henry. Mainly because his tour included a 45min history lesson about the formation of the lake, local Mayan culture, with a sprinkle of folklore and facts, such as why some locals dislike and find the term โ€˜Indian Noseโ€™ offensive.

At 4am we were collected from our accommodation and brought to the trailhead in Santa Clara. Head torches on, an hour climb treated us to a silhouette of volcanoes, including the erupting Volcan Fuego.

It was a clear starry night sky. We sat at a quiet mirador, shooting stars kept us wishing, while Henry kept us entertained. A wealth of information from a very hilarious and cocky character (he will quiz you so pay attention ๐Ÿ˜‚).

Just before the sun rose, we headed to the summit to join other groups. And with a cup of tea/coffee and some local sweet bread in hand, we welcomed the day. Followed by a fun photoshoot with a mind-blowing background ๐Ÿ˜

This tour was 150Q (Henry's Whatsapp: ), but roam the streets, and book the night before to bag a trip for as little as 80-100Q! (It may not include a history lesson though!)

Swipe to see why it's called the 'Indian Nose' - can you spot it?

Xalapa is *so* boring, don't go! ๐Ÿ‘€
That one time in Cuba... ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡บ๐ŸŽบ
Considering the first time we visited San Pedro was such a blur (Paddy's Day circa '17 when our arm could be twisted into having a drink - or 10 ๐Ÿ™ˆ), this time we were adamant on enjoying this backpacker hub that, we think, is so wrongly advertised as a party town!

Sharing some budget-friendly recommendations we hope you'll enjoy as much as we did below ๐Ÿ‘‡

๐Ÿ›๏ธ Casa Elena is the BEST place to stay at only 60Qpp for shared bathroom + 150Q for private bathroom. Ran by a beautiful family with a kitchen, hand-washing facilities, rooftop views, workable WiFi + private access to the lake.

๐Ÿ—จ๏ธ Next door is where both myself + Cora enjoyed our week long 1:1 Spanish lessons. The teachers are fantastic + tailor the lessons to your level. You can do an hour, day, week or full on immersive homestay experience - at very reasonable prices.

๐Ÿ˜‹ Places we religiously ate at:

- Restaurant Jakuu: similar prices to the restaurants along the strip, the food was always delicious, had lots of veggie options and the portions were massive! We're talking one dish between two!

- 'Doblado Lady': a street food stall set up from 5:30-7pm, potato stuffed tortilla, topped with everything from beetroot to carrot, guacamole, cabbage and more. Portion of 2 is only 15Q (put this code into G.Maps: MPWH+37Q)

- Pupusas Salvadores: at just 25Q Sonia's Pupusas are the talk of the strip. With vegetarian options, huge portions and a 'help yourself pickled side salad' we practically lived here.

- Comedor Rosita: along the strip, across from Cafeterรญa Johanna, while opening hours are quite random it is worth walking by for cheap meat and fish dishes, with big portions for only 25Q. A very popular place with the locals.

- Comedor Central: near the fresh fruit market, for the best, cheap breakfasts and lunches (the pancakes and typico are only 20Q including coffee) the owners are the sweetest! Pop this code into your G Maps: MPRG+QWJ.

- Coffee Espresso: for local 8Q Guatemalan coffee that will send you to the year 3000, and delicious, (not too sweet) banana bread (and other pastries) for 8Q.

We won't lie, we were never 100% that we could actually do this. Moreso because every single family; parent and child dynamic is so different. You. Can. Never. Truly. Know.

But you're damn right we were gonna give it a try!

We owed that to ourselves, and to Cora. Who we want to always know that, if she has a passion or dream, she SHOULD follow her heart and at least try, no matter what anyone thinks.

Based on DMs, sometimes we might make it look easy, and sometimes it is! But never think for a second that we don't have the same struggles as any parent with a little person who craves independence, struggles with big feelings, and goes through the most bizarre phases (oh god the phases ๐Ÿ˜ซ), on top of eeeeverything else ๐Ÿคฃ.

Nevermind the fact that we live a somewhat unpredictable life with very little consistency and routine, with days that even we, as grown ass adults, struggle with (poor Cora having to put up with us on those days ๐Ÿคฃ).

Then there are days we burn out, and wish we had the support of our family, yeno, to have all the Nanas and Grandads within reach to give us a little break, and a moment to be Katie, Luke, and Husband and Wife.

But would we change any of it for a second?! Nope. No way. Not a chance. Hell feckin' NAWW.

Because what this life is giving to our beautiful little girl is invaluable.

The knowledge in that nature is beautiful, we must protect and take care of it. That people can be wonderful, we must trust. Cultures and religions are important, we must educate ourselves and accept. And that life is short, we must enjoy every second, and live it as if it could end tomorrow.

Thanks so much to this wonderful community for having our backs and supporting our every step. We know we don't always show the vulnerable moments and true, true behind the scenes, like the days we're all having tantrums ๐Ÿคฃ but just know they happen and they suck.

As Cora always says (inspired by Chicken Little), tomorrow is a new day.
For only Q500 (โ‚ฌ60) you can join a group of 30+ people and climb 3.756 meters above sea level with, to spend the night in a comfortable, weather protected tent with a thick mattress, 3 meals plus snacks and a beer.

Transport to and from accommodation plus free cold weather gear rental is included, not to mention the STELLAR guides who take the best care of you throughout the entire experience.

(What a steal for such an experience!)

For an extra dose of genuine Guatemala and 900meters of bonus acclimation, spend the night with a remarkable family and start the tour from San Jose Calderas for only โ‚ฌ9 per night (DM us for the Airbnb link!)

[P.S if Soy Tours is fully booked the only other agency we were willing to consider is, run by the family we stayed with in Calderas. And yes, kids are welcome on their tours!]
Travel Reality: The Bed Bug Edition ๐Ÿ˜ฉ

We've come up against bed bugs twice during our many years of travelling, and wanted to share how we handle the situation in the best way we can!

A reminder that bed bugs do not mean the accommodation is dirty - just unlucky! But it's important to notify the host ASAP! Getting rid of bed bugs is such a pain in the arse, can be detrimental to a reputation, and can be very costly for the host/local to sort so try to keep your cool!

As backpackers we do have a responsibility to do whatever we can to ensure we're not dragging the little hitchhikers around to other homes, so don't neglect and take every precaution.

Please do share any other tips to help others in this situation below ๐Ÿ‘‡

Happy travels x
