From a $30,000 loss on his first venture, to building a national stone supply business shaped entirely by long-term relationships, this conversation with James McCarthy of goes far beyond the finished projects we see online.

Ep 41 has landed.

Comment “JAMES” and we’ll send you the direct link to the episode.

In this episode of Behind the Design, we speak about:

* the early failure that still drives how he leads today
* why the hard things are actually your competitive moat
* co-founding GatherCo with two business partners
* learning to say no, and knowing what you’re not
* doing things at the start that don’t scale
* trading the traditional showroom for a digital-first model
* putting people in the right seats and protecting their strengths
* responding from a place of calm, not reaction

A conversation about resilience, partnership, the realities of building a product-based business, and the lessons that only come from doing the hard things first.

We light the architecture, not the room. A good lighting plan considers ceiling heights, sightlines, joinery, and how you actually live in a space. Not just an even grid of downlights.

Here’s how we approach an electrical layout from the first concept through to the reflected ceiling plan that gets handed to your builder and electrician.

The last 10 weeks have been pretty wild.

14 episodes of Behind the Design recorded, celebrated our 2 year birthday, a new part-time social media team member joining the business, and from August we’ll be expanding the podcast interstate.

At Unfolded, we’ve also taken on a multi residential project in the northern beaches and are about to start on one of Fernwood Sydney’s new women’s gym. We’re also in the process of hiring another designer to support our clients and larger scale projects, which feels really exciting.

There are definitely moments where I stop and think about how both the studio and the podcast started as creative ideas, and have now grown into full businesses with incredible people around them.

Very grateful for my team, our clients, and the people around me who continue to back me across both businesses. Feeling very proud of what we’re building.

If you’ve been following along, listening to the pod, sharing episodes, enquiring with the studio or supporting Unfolded in any way, thank you. It genuinely means so much.

A dining space should feel as good as it looks.

Comfort, flow, lighting, materiality and proportion all play such a big role in creating a space people genuinely want to gather in. The most beautiful dining spaces aren’t only visually considered, they invite you to slow down, stay longer and connect.

At Unfolded, we focus on creating interiors that balance function and feeling equally, layering warmth, texture and timeless pieces that feel elevated yet liveable.

We’re now taking on new interior design projects from October onwards.

If you’ve been thinking about starting a project, we’d love to hear from you.

James learned this lesson early on…

Every founder thinks they’re the only one struggling through the pressure, uncertainty, and constant problem solving.

But one conversation with his cousin completely shifted the way he viewed business challenges:
The hard parts of building a business aren’t signs you’re failing.
They’re often the very things protecting what you’re building.

A beautiful home is never “just furniture.”

Every detail is considered.
Layout, scale, lighting, textures, durability, materials, functionality, flow.

The best spaces don’t happen by accident, they’re designed that way.
