Banyak orang mengira gigi bolong pada anak yang masih menyusu itu pasti karena ASI.
Padahal, yang lebih berperan biasanya adalah frekuensi menyusu, kebiasaan menyusu malam, usia anak, dan kebersihan gigi yang belum optimal.
ASI tetap merupakan nutrisi terbaik untuk anak.
Tetapi saat gigi mulai tumbuh terutama ketika anak sudah memasuki usia di atas 1 tahun dan masih sering menyusu sepanjang malam tanpa dibersihkan giginya risiko gigi berlubang bisa meningkat.
Kenapa bisa begitu?
1️⃣ Saat anak tidur, produksi air liur menurun
2️⃣ Gula alami dari susu (LAKTOSA) jadi lebih lama menempel di gigi
3️⃣ Bakteri memanfaatkan gula tersebut dan menghasilkan asam
4️⃣ Lama-lama enamel gigi mulai rusak
Menurut American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD), kebiasaan menyusu malam yang sering tanpa membersihkan gigi merupakan salah satu faktor risiko early childhood caries (ECC), terutama pada anak yang giginya sudah lebih banyak tumbuh.
Jadi, bukan berarti ASI itu buruk.
Yang penting adalah mulai menyesuaikan kebiasaan oral hygiene seiring pertumbuhan anak.
Yang bisa dilakukan:
✔ Setelah menyusu malam, usap atau sikat gigi anak
✔ Gunakan pasta gigi berfluoride sesuai usia sejak gigi pertama muncul
✔ Hindari tambahan pemanis pada dot
✔ Biasakan minum air putih setelah menyusu bila usia sudah memungkinkan
✔ Rutin kontrol ke dokter gigi anak sejak gigi pertama tumbuh
Jadi, kuncinya bukan menyalahkan ASI. Tapi memahami bahwa semakin bertambah usia anak dan semakin banyak gigi yang tumbuh, kebersihan gigi juga menjadi semakin penting.

Karena saya sangat paham, setiap orang tua pasti punya ketakutan anaknya jadi TRAUMA ke dokter gigi.
Dan memang pada prosesnya, ada anak yang menangis, menolak, atau harus ditahan oleh orang tuanya karena belum merasa NYAMAN dan AMAN dengan tindakan yang dilakukan.
Padahal idealnya, anak datang ke dokter gigi bukan saat sudah harus DITAMBAL. Karena tindakan seperti penambalan membutuhkan anak untuk bisa cukup tenang menghadapi suara, getaran, rasa, bau, dan berbagai stimulasi lainnya.
Itulah kenapa saya selalu mengingatkan, kunjungan pertama ke dokter gigi sebaiknya dimulai sejak usia 1 TAHUN dan rutin setiap 6 BULAN sekali.
Tujuannya supaya anak terbiasa dulu dengan lingkungan dokter gigi. Anak belajar bahwa datang ke dokter gigi tidak selalu berarti sakit atau ditindaki.
Tapi kalau memang sudah terlambat dan tindakan harus dilakukan, kadang orang tua memang perlu menguatkan hati. Karena sering kali lebih baik anak menangis sebentar saat dirawat, daripada terus menahan sakit, SUSAH MAKAN, atau tidak nyaman setiap hari karena GIGI BERLUBANG.
Dan yang sering terlupakan, gigi berlubang juga bisa memengaruhi kualitas MAKAN, TIDUR, sampai TUMBUH KEMBANG anak secara keseluruhan.
Jadi jangan tunggu sampai anak sudah kesakitan baru diperiksa. Karena kadang anak yang makannya lama atau susah makan sebenarnya memang sedang merasa tidak nyaman saat mengunyah.
Kuncinya tetap sama: MENCEGAH selalu lebih baik daripada MENGOBATI.

Just mucus.
Just a blocked nose.
But one of the biggest mistakes I see is parents waiting YEARS to treat chronic allergies because the child “looks okay.”
Meanwhile… the child may be:
• mouth breathing every night
• sleeping poorly
• snoring
• developing chronic airway inflammation
• growing with a smaller airway over time
Many children already start showing signs of dust mite allergy from around 2 years old.
And sadly, many parents only seek help much later once the snoring, poor sleep or concentration problems become severe.
Another very common concern I hear is fear of steroid nasal sprays.
Some parents become so worried about sprays that they only rely on saline… while the child continues struggling to breathe properly every night during important years of growth and development.
Saline can help symptoms, but some children may need more than saline alone to properly control chronic inflammation.
Many parents are also surprised to learn that allergy immunotherapy (“allergy vaccines”) can often be started from around age 5 for suitable children.
This message is so important because children do not suddenly develop airway problems overnight.
For many, it quietly starts with years of untreated allergies and mouth breathing.
Early recognition and proper treatment may help protect:

🤍 facial growth
🤍 future airway health

Waktu itu saya mengambil tesis tentang hubungan postur kepala, profil wajah, dan obstruksi saluran napas pada anak.
Jujur, saat itu topik seperti ini belum banyak dibicarakan.
Belum banyak orang tua yang aware.
Bahkan di dunia kedokteran gigi sendiri, pembahasannya juga belum seluas sekarang.
Tapi entah kenapa, saya memang selalu merasa topik ini menarik. Karena semakin dipelajari, semakin terasa bahwa pertumbuhan anak itu bukan cuma soal gigi yang rapi.
Ada cara bernapas, posisi lidah, kualitas tidur, postur, dan banyak hal lain yang ternyata saling berhubungan.
Dan sekarang, saya bersyukur.
Pelan-pelan awareness masyarakat mulai tumbuh.
Orang tua mulai lebih banyak bertanya.
Diskusinya mulai lebih terbuka.
Semakin banyak juga tenaga kesehatan yang peduli dengan hal ini.
Masih banyak yang perlu dipelajari tentunya.
Tapi rasanya menyenangkan melihat sebuah topik yang dulu terasa sangat kecil, sekarang mulai mendapatkan perhatian 🙂
11 bulan, bukan perjalanan yang sebentar.
Dan ini bukan cuma soal gigi yang jadi lebih rapi, ini tentang ANAK yang belajar beradaptasi. Tentang ORANG TUA yang konsisten, walaupun capek, walaupun kadang ragu.
Tentang proses kecil yang dilakukan setiap hari, yang akhirnya jadi perubahan besar.
Tidak semua anak bisa melewati ini tanpa DUKUNGAN PENUH, dan tidak semua orang tua sanggup bertahan tanpa KOMITMEN yang kuat.
Hasil ini adalah kombinasi dari kesabaran anak, keteguhan orang tua, dan proses yang dijalani bersama.
Saya tahu, di balik foto “AFTER” ini, ada hari-hari sulit yang tidak terlihat.
