âThe artistry was extraordinary, but what stayed with me was the way migration was rendered,â she says. âFragile and strong at once. Not as a spectacle, but as a lived condition.â
Sirota is associate dean of academic initiatives and a professor of architecture at Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning. Sheâs also a refugee to the U.S.
Watching the puppets express grief and vulnerability around themes of displacement was a visceral experience. Through puppetry, the Marseille-based troupe highlighted a humanity often missing from politicized discourse.
âI left thinking about portability,â Sirota says. âWhat would it mean to bring this work into an American research university â an institution that produces knowledge about migration, policy, and borders, but is often insulated from their emotional reality?â
Through a collaboration between Taubman College and the Arts Initiative, Sirota helped bring "Rebetiko" to the U.S. for its North American debut at the Detroit Institute of Art.
âThe performance functioned as common ground,â Sirota said. âIt gave us a shared language and demonstrated how the arts can activate collective imagination.â

On Friday, crews began this work by removing 26 of 30 clappersâthe swinging metal components inside the carillon bellsâwith the remaining four, the heaviest of the bunch, being removed in August, just prior to the reinstallation of all new clappers. The heaviest of the remaining four clappers weighs nearly 1,000 pounds and will require a 50-ton rough terrain crane to safely bring it to the ground.
The project is intended to improve playability, reduce the risk of injury for performers, and preserve long-term use.
The Baird Carillon contains 53 bronze bells originally cast by John Taylor & Co. in Loughborough, England. The instrument, housed in Burton Memorial Tower on Ingalls Mall, is the third heaviest carillon in the world. Its largest bell, which strikes the hour, weighs 12 tons, while the smallest weighs just 15 pounds đđđ
âThe weight of the current clappers has ruled out the performance of various parts of the carillon repertory, including Richard Giszczakâs virtuosic arrangement of âThe Victors,â arranged in 1998 for the Baird Carillon,â said Tiffany Ng, university carillonist since 2015 and associate professor of music in the School of Music, Theatre & Dance.
âSo, we are excited to start playing a fuller range of carillon repertoire for Central Campus in the fall, including âThe Victorsâ!â

While majoring in dance as an undergraduate, Gross took electives in anatomy, kinesiology, and biological anthropology. In one graduate-level course, which involved dissecting a cadaver, she realized how her perspective as a dancer yielded completely different insights from the perspectives of her medically- and anthropologically-minded classmates.
Through this artistic lens, and grant funding from the Arts Initiative, Gross developed âArt of Anatomyââa seven week curricular project bringing together U-M students from various disciplines to explore the interplay between creative expression and the human body. Partnering with art historian Jennifer Gear (PhD â18) to co-design the course, they printed hundreds of plastic âbonesâ and let the students get to work đŚ´đŚ´đŚ´

Yueshan Jiang (BFA ââ26) is a Stamps senior specializing in graphic design, publication design, and brand identity, combining traditional and contemporary elements to tell stories through books, posters, infographics, and visual systems.
Growing up in China, Jiangâs interest in design was encouraged by her grandfather, who worked on hand-engraving steel stencils (ĺťé˘ćżĺ) for printing. This early exposure to ââindustrial vernacularâ typography formed the foundation of her visual sensibility.
Her research-based graphic design system will challenge stereotypical notions of Hanzi (logographic Chinese characters) and highlight the typographic diversity of everyday urban streetscapes. Her goal is to replace ideas based on the red-and-gold and faux-calligraphy of the ââChinatown Aestheticâ with a deeper, nuanced understanding.
The Big Idea Award aims to motivate students to develop ambitious aspirations that reflect the values of a Stamps education providing one senior or eligible team with $25,000 to help launch a major, ambitious project after graduation.

Through painting, printmaking, and mixed media, Sobel explores these systems that shape forest ecosystems.
Drawing on field research and scientific collaboration, Sobel highlights keystone speciesâfrom white oaks to beaversâand the often-unseen relationships that sustain life both above and below ground.
Blending materials like encaustic, cyanotype, and found-object assemblage, the work invites a closer look at the complexityâand beautyâof the natural world, with the hope of deepening connection to the environments we depend on.
"Into the Forest for the Trees" is free and open to the public through June 19.

Today's Detroit Free Press celebrates the fantastic career of Jim Burnstein, the soon-to-be-retired professor/screenwriter who created U-M's popular screenwriting program in 1995.
Free Press writer Julie Hinds looks back on the beloved mentor's 30-year legacy at the university in "U-M professor's life story is set partly in Ann Arbor, partly in Hollywood." It's a great read.
Among his many accomplishments, Burnstein wrote the screenplay for 1994's "Renaissance Man," starring Danny DeVito. He is pictured here, back in the day, with the film's director Penny Marshall and producer Sara Colleton. (Image provided by Burnstein.)
This view through an open door reveals rehearsal by the Telegraph Quartet, now in its second year of a three-year artist residency at SMTD. The members of the quartet â Joseph Maile and Eric Chin (violins), Jeremiah Shaw (cello), and Pei-Ling Lin (viola) â coach student chamber music groups, conduct studio classes or seminars, and offer mentorship sessions to students interested in chamber music careers. While the quartet performs several times each year on campus, the lucky passerby might catch a concert from the hallway...

Congratulations to the University of Michigan's Shavonne Coleman, assistant professor of theatre & drama, currently making her professional directing debut with âEclipsed" at the Detroit Repertory Theatre.
The drama takes place in Liberia in 2003 during the end of the Second Liberian Civil War. And while war stories usually follow the soldiers in battle, "Eclipsed" focuses on the roles women are forced to play amid such violence and devastation. (Photo Credit: Detroit Repertory Theatre.)
"Eclipsed" runs through May 17. Written by Danai Gurira, best known for her roles in âBlack Pantherâ and âThe Walking Dead,â the play made its Broadway debut in 2016, with actress Lupita Nyongâo as part of the cast.
U-M's Coleman, a native Detroiter, also works with Mosaic Youth Theatre of Detroit, where she helps adapt, write, direct and coach youth theater.
