L’ultimo giorno a Mestia pioveva, siamo rimasti chiusi in casa a cazzeggiare e, finché le sensazioni erano ancora vive, ho scritto sulle note del telefono quello che poi è diventato il paragrafo centrale di questo articolo. Decimila caratteri solo per raccontare quei pochi minuti che precedono la prima curva.
L’ho ripreso in mano mesi più tardi: insieme a Mose gli abbiamo dato forma, intrecciando le nostre due prospettive. Ne è uscita una bella storia, sicuro la più bella che abbiamo scritto!
Le foto le ho scattate con una compatta a focale fissa da 35mm, più per comodità che per scelta stilistica. Quella lunghezza focale dovrebbe restituire la realtà così come la vedono i nostri occhi ma riguardandole ho realizzato di essere talmente assuefatta all’immaginario distorto dei grandangoli da action cam che una grande parete, raccontata per quello che è, sembra quasi noiosa.
Eppure anche nel testo abbiamo provato a fare lo stesso: restituire la realtà per quello che è.
La discesa è una prima ripetizione su una delle pareti di ghiaccio più iconiche del Caucaso - ma certi titoli, per quanto veri, finiscono per dire meno della storia che contengono.

Come tutte le migliori idee, nasce nel più semplice dei modi: esattamente un anno fa, davanti a una birra, Filo mi ha proposto di andare in Colorado a girare un Western sull’ultrarunning, e io ho risposto sì. Easy peasy. Da lì in poi comincia la parte complicata, ma quella ve la racconteremo dal vivo.
Ultrawest è il mio (nostro) primo progetto video, per certi aspetti è grezzo e molte cose potevano essere fatte meglio, però è sincero (sicuramente prodotto con molta più passione che budget 😅). Abbiamo giocato un po’ a fare gli Hunter Thompson attraversando le Rocky Mountains a bordo di un’auto a noleggio che è stata la nostra casa per 10 giorni, e ci siamo divertiti.
Come ci siamo detti spesso per sdrammatizzare: se da un lato siamo consapevoli che l’argomento interesserà sì e no a trenta persone, dall’altro sappiamo con certezza che ci saranno almeno trenta persone che avranno piacere di vederlo. Questo film è per loro, ma anche per chi è curioso di scoprire il fil rouge che lega cowboys, città minerarie in declino e gente che corre gare di 100 miglia.

Of course we enjoy the outdoors staged by recreating the perfect conditions for filming memorable tricks, but let's face it, reality goes far beyond saturated colors and impressive descents.
In a multi-day crossing, especially if organized in such an uncertain historical period, the challenge is to get by well with what you find, and we often found crust, but also an intense experience that is worth sharing.
The truth is that we don't ski just because of good snow, and above all, there is much more to say about the mountains.”
