I’ve been feeling hesitant about sharing anything here, but I am feeling happy about my current training with Ume so I thought I would share an update.

We are working towards doing some injections for Ume’s arthritis at home.

helped me come up with this set up and I’m feeling pretty good about it. I’m practicing tenting the skin and trying to pair the cue “hands on” with food. Ultimately, l will just be saying “hands on,” tenting the skin, and then doing an injection. This is the beginning stages so it’s not perfect and we practice everything with a capped needle.

Just a final note that this training and prescription was part of a longer conversation with our really kind veterinarian!
There’s more to this but essentially, behavior is more complicated than a dog constantly trying to assert dominance. The myth of the alpha has made space for techniques or ideas that can ultimately harm the canine human bond. What’s your “Roman Empire” when it comes to dogs? Accessibility shortly in the comments.
January is Train Your Dog Month. Just a reminder that learning, or training, is always happening. Behavior is strengthened or reduced by what it comes into contact with in the environment. For this reason, it’s helpful to think beyond behavior being good or bad, and to focus on setting up the environment so that desirable behaviors get repeated. In the second video, as Jerry dips his head into the snow. My guess is he repeats that behavior (putting his head into the snow) for multiple reasons- he might smell something under the snow or it just might feel good to bury his muzzle in the snow. He did this multiple times on our walk, and especially near bushes or plants. It is also Jerry’s birthday- he is two today!
Why wait for one treat when you can just grab the whole treat pouch?- Jerry maybe 🤣
Working on introducing a new dremel. We are doing this with a “start button” which basically means Jerry does a behavior and I start the dremel. If he doesn’t do it, then I would just feed him and not turn it on. We learned about start buttons from. Start button procedures should also feed the “no,” so even if Jerry wasn’t doing the chin rest, which starts the process, I would still feed him. I like to start out by just getting my dogs used to the sound of something before I move it towards their body. I probably will not ask Jerry to be in a down and do a chin rest when we are using this tool on his nails, but that’s fine for now. The chin rest is an easy behavior for us both, so that’s where we are starting. I also want my dogs to be used to the dremel in a variety of contexts. Slow is fast when we are considering a behavior like nail care, which we will need to do for the rest of our dog’s lives. I would rather have my dogs be comfortable with grooming than have them runaway when I pull out a brush or a dremel.
Would it surprise you to know that a lot of dog trainers don’t have set meal times for their dogs? I’ve chatted with both and about this and it’s helped me remember that dogs, like humans, might have varied times when they are hungry. It might shift on days. You don’t have to wait until a certain hour to feed your dogs if they seem hungry. Some days I want to eat dinner, and some days I don’t! I’ve seen an uptick in this with daylight savings- there’s basically no reason why you can’t feed your dogs a little earlier if they seem hungry. This is of course different than a dog that is refusing to eat or has a change in appetite. If for some reason your dog is skipping meals or you notice a change in appetite, it’s time to see your veterinarian.
No fancy editing or voiceover for this reel, just a small update on my training with Jerry. The main thing we are working on his behavior on leash when we see other dogs. The training itself isn’t that impressive- most of the work is going into thoughtfully setting up the environment. Thankfully I have friends who also like driving to leas populated parks and doing some training! is in these training videos but you’ll note you might not see them or they are really far away- that is the whole point! We are working really slowly and with a lot of distance. We aren’t necessarily in a rush and we might not ever have our dogs meet. We are just enjoying where we are right now and seeing what we learn from our dogs.
Here’s our digging sounds (volume up!)

A more delicate sound in comparison to our husky screaming 😂
Baby puppies sleep a lot. Sometimes pet guardians are surprised when their puppy becomes a teenager that sleeps less during the day, has lots of energy, and is more excited by the environment then the guardian. has a great reel about this, but one really important tip for puppies: reinforce them coming back to you after give a recall cue or say their name. That means pair something they like with the cue. Even if your puppy turns their head after you say their name, praise or the sound of your voice alone might not have an impact on future behavior. It’s crucial that you pair that looking back with something like play or food. I know it can feel like a lot of treats, but using food is one of the easiest ways to strengthen future behavior.
Thanks for the inspiration and thanks to my friends that are also fans of longlines and harnesses. It can feel weirdly alienating to be someone who practices positive reinforcement training.
