Instead we’re looking back to April when we hosted Petals for the People, a collab with and CUSP. This incredible event included a raffle (obvi), delicious food from Top Left Catering, and, and a bouquet making workshop hosted by. It was just what we needed and a perfect way to transition into spring.

Y’all, we are LESS THAN 20 people away from reaching our 911 Emergency Preparedness Survey goal of 200 respondents! In case you didn’t know, we are completing an in-house research project to assess people across Cook County’s experiences using 911, an ambulance, or interacting with EMS. Responses from folks living in Englewood, Back of the Yards, New City, Brighton Park, Roseland, Pullman, Proviso and Thornton Townships are especially helpful. Additionally, if you identify as transgender or genderqueer, we want to hear from you!
Thank you to every person who has taken the time to be vulnerable and share their stories in service of our mission. We are hopeful that this research will set a precedent for meaningful, lasting interventions to improve the health and safety of Chicagoans experiencing 911-related emergencies.

When systems fail us, we can practice solidarity through action and watch out for signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke in those around us, especially those who are more vulnerable to the effects of extreme heat. Seniors, people with disabilities, people who are pregnant, and people whose asthma can be triggered by weather extremes.

From June 23rd to August 15th, fellows will develop life saving skills grounded in care, emergency response education, political education, and collective responsibility. We are doing this fellowship because in alignment with our Mission and Values, we believe young people deserve spaces that actually see them. Not just as “the future,” but as people with ideas, power, emotions, creativity, leadership, and voices🗣️🗣️🗣️

❤️Does UMedics offer Stop the Bleed® training?
We have a unique, independently-developed training method that was designed with the long-term health and wellness of all Black lives in mind. Our Basic and Advanced Gunshot Wound First Response Workshops cover similar topics to those found in a Stop the Bleed® training, but our offerings provide a more holistic approach to preparing folks to be on the scene of a firearm emergency. Stop the Bleed® information is included in the American Heart Association CPR/AED/First Aid certification course, which is available by request.

We are so grateful you want to be a part of UMedics! Because of the nature of our work, our membership process is layered, based on deep relationship building. Our Community Emergency Preparedness Survey, the first grassroots research project of its kind in Chicago, has been open for a few months now; and your responses are already so insightful. Folks have been vulnerable with us about sharing their deeply personal experiences with calling 911 for health emergencies, all while expressing a desire to skill up in order to protect their neighbors next time it happens.
We know that a variety of health emergencies disproportionately affect Black and low income communities. This is shared cultural knowledge embedded in the ways we interact with one another, but it is also supported by research. We face higher rates of cardiac arrests (ex. when the heart stops beating), firearm-related injuries, and having to go to a hospital for an asthma attack.
In the 10+ years of Ujimaa Medics, across all types of our trainings, one thing is consistent: folks everywhere want to #StayReady and know how to confidently help their village in the face of an emergency.
