After graduation, he plans to pursue a career in civil engineering focused on sustainable infrastructure.

The UMD Chapter of ASCE works to promote learning, professional development, and community within the Civil Engineering major at UMD and within their professional field. ASCE supports student professional development through networking and educational events. This student org has had many accomplishments this year, including:

⚙️ Setting up an internship archive which students can access and connect with past and present members on various job opportunities
⚙️ Increasing undergraduate enrollment in ASCE
⚙️ Completing their first fully designed canoe in the last 3 years

Mia is a first-generation student, majoring in bioengineering with a minor in Science, Technology, Ethics, and Policy. She became involved with the WIE Program as a mentee and went on to serve as a mentor, tutor, and mentor coordinator.
Formerly on the University of Maryland iGEM team, Mia represented the Clark School in Paris at the 2024 International Genetically Engineered Machine Competition. She has previously worked at MilliporeSigma and Clasp Therapeutics, and is a member of Omicron Delta Kappa. Mia is interested in pursuing translational, health equity, and therapeutic engineering opportunities after graduation.
Mia also received the Fischell Department of Bioengineering Outstanding Leadership Award.
When I got to UMD, I was nervous. I did not come in with everything figured out. I did not grow up around engineering, and I was not someone who arrived already knowing how to navigate research, internships, college resources, or even if I truly belonged in this field. What changed my path was the Clark School community. There were mentors ready to guide me, programs to support me, and student leaders who showed me what was possible. That support changed everything for me. Because of that, my commitment has always been to give that same support back to others.
Whether I am mentoring through the Center for Minorities in Science and Engineering, designing outreach workshops through Women in Engineering, leading IEEE, or conducting robotics research, it all comes back to the same mission: helping students see they belong here and don’t have to figure out engineering alone.
To any current or incoming student, you do not need to have everything figured out when you arrive. You do not need the perfect background or to know exactly where you are headed. What matters is being willing to show up, work hard, ask for help, and take advantage of the opportunities around you. The Clark School has so many resources, but what makes them powerful is actually using them.
To my mentors, friends, faculty, staff, and the communities that poured into me, thank you. I am graduating, but I am not done serving this place. The work of building a more welcoming, supportive engineering community continues.
This summer, I am excited to continue my work at the Army Research Laboratory, where I will intern in robotics research focused on unmanned systems. Studying abroad wasn't just about taking classes. It was about perspective. It was about realizing that engineering is a global profession. Problems are solved differently across the world. There's so much to learn from how other countries approach technology, sustainability, energy, and community. Iceland showed me landscapes that feel otherworldly, from northern lights that dance across the sky to geothermal features that power entire regions. It reminded me that engineering isn't just about solving problems in labs, it's about understanding how energy, innovation, and nature intersect.
The Clark School truly believes that study abroad should be accessible to everyone. Whether it's a full semester abroad or a few weeks during winter break, whether you're studying renewable energy in Europe or interning internationally, they support you in making it happen.
I can't recommend study abroad enough. Some of the people I met and the experiences I had in Iceland are things I'll carry with me forever. If you're a prospective or current student thinking about whether to go, say yes.

I came to Maryland unsure whether I belonged in engineering. I didn't grow up seeing what an engineering path looked like. But CMSE showed me that belonging in engineering doesn't depend on what you knew before college. It depends on whether you're willing to work, ask for help, and lift others up as you climb.
Four years later, I'm still deeply connected to CMSE. I've tutored calculus, physics, and pre-calculus; mentored new Bridge cohorts; and watched students who came in nervous become confident engineers. That's why I keep giving back. Through CMSE events like First Friday gatherings and the Winter Leadership Retreat, I've built connections with peers, corporate partners, and mentors who shaped my path. It was these CMSE connections and mentorship that I landed my internship at the Army Research Laboratory, working with incredible researchers who continue to mentor me as I grow as an engineer.
I found my closest friends through the Flexus and Virtus Living and Learning Program under Women in Engineering. Living together, taking the same classes, supporting each other through hard moments, those bonds run deep. Through WIE, I've helped design hands-on workshops introducing middle/high school students to circuits, Arduino, and robotics. Seeing their eyes light up when building their first circuit reminds me why mentorship matters. WIE's anniversary events and speaking opportunities gave me platforms to share my journey & encourage other students.
I've served on the executive boards of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers and LSAMP STEM, deepening my CMSE connections and building peer networks among underrepresented students.
CMSE and WIE taught me that success in engineering is not a solo journey. It's built on community, mentorship, and the choice to give back.
With the help of Tara, August, Arthur, and our executive board, we worked to revitalize IEEE into a place where students could grow technically, professionally, and personally. We secured corporate sponsorships, hosted recruiter events and company interview opportunities, invited professors and labs to speak about research, and created more ways for students to build community with each other. A big part of that growth also came through collaboration with Maryland Engineering Student
Organizations and UMD Engineering Career Services, who helped us connect students directly with professional opportunities.
This year, IEEE became more than just a student organization for me. It became a platform to help students find internships, research, mentors, leadership roles, and technical spaces where they could actually build. Through HIVE, our collaborative maker space with Women in Computer and Electrical Engineering, students have a place to tinker, prototype, and bring ideas to life.
If you are a current or incoming student, I really encourage you to join student organizations early. IEEE shaped my Maryland experience by giving me confidence, community, and a way to serve others while growing as an engineer. Sometimes the opportunities that change your trajectory start with simply showing up to one meeting.

My senior capstone project (ENEE408I) this year has been a deep dive into computer vision and real-world automation. Working with Intralox as our industry client, we're designing a system to track packages on conveyor belts using image processing and machine learning. Seeing theory become actual solutions that could help companies optimize their operations is incredibly rewarding.
I also conduct research in the Motion and Teaming Lab, where I work on distributed robotics problems. Earlier in my time here, I worked on kilobot swarm research and clustering algorithms. Now I'm involved with the PainterBot project, exploring how robots can coordinate and accomplish tasks through distributed control.
Beyond that, I've completed hands-on lab courses across the ECE curriculum. ENEE101 introduced me to robotics with soccer robots. ENEE461 controls lab had me programming autonomous drones for my final project. In CMSC477, I worked with a DJI RoboMaster platform, using computer vision for object detection and manipulating an arm to pick up colored blocks. All of these experiences have shown me how robotics and controls apply across so many engineering domains at UMD.
When I added the Robotics and Autonomous Systems minor, it helped me bridge hardware and software in ways I wouldn't have found in ECE alone. If you care about building things that work in the real world, control systems, perception, and robotics, the Clark School gives you the tools to learn.
