重篤の兄を見舞いに故郷にかえった。
緑燃ゆる里山の集落をいくつも抜けてようやくたどり着いた。
道々、収穫期を迎えた麦の田んぼの野が広がる。
昔から稲作の裏作として、麦や小麦が栽培されてきた。
私が子供の頃もそうであった。
黄金に広がる美しい景色は「麦秋」と表現されてきた。

しかし、私の住む広島市近郊の農村で、豊かに実った麦や小麦が五月の風に揺れる風景を見た記憶がほとんどない。
