This Black History Month, the Residence Hall Association is highlighting the history of Black-Diallo-Miller Hall. This hall is named to tribute to the impact of Harold Alonza Black, Mary Blackwell Diallo, and Kerry Rushin Miller, the first African American students to enroll to the University of Georgia as freshmen and to complete their undergraduate degrees.

Harold Alonza Black retired as professor emeritus from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville after 24 years of service as the James F. Smith Jr. Professor of Finance. He earned both his master’s and doctoral degrees from Ohio State University.

Mary Blackwell Diallo earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in French literature from the University of Georgia before completing her doctorate at Emory University. She went on to teach at Morehouse College and Florida A&M University, retiring in in 2021.

Kerry Rushin Miller retired from BellSouth after 29 years of service, primarily based in Charlotte, North Carolina. She participated in Leadership Charlotte and received numerous accolades for her service to the Charlotte community. Following her retirement, she joined the Urban League of Central Carolinas, Inc. and later became a member of the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women’s Clubs.

On February 9th, 2026, RHA Director of Advocacy Anu Fawehinmi authored a proclamation to recognize Black History Month as well as leaders who shaped the University of Georgia’s history. This proclamation encourages students at the University of Georgia to learn about and reflect on the lasting contributions and impact of Black and African American individuals.
