“I had to knock on many doors as an undergrad to acquire research exposure and, for me personally, being part of the UF Health Cancer Institute has allowed me to open doors for other students who are also in the shoes I was once in,” said Maria Carolina Hernandez, an ambassador and graduate student in the College of Medicine Graduate Program in Biomedical Sciences Cancer Biology Concentration. “A set of moments that are always incredibly fulfilling is when the students or teachers who are attending our science workshops enter the room with very little knowledge and slowly, I see them grasp the concept of what we’re teaching them. You can see their mind racing, really applying what we’ve taught them in the experiment and asking all sorts of awesome questions.”

There’s no typical day as a clinical research coordinator. Some days, coordinators are in the clinic seeing patients. Other days, they’re working at their desks inputting data so it can be submitted into the electronic data capture system that goes to trial sponsors to assess data points for studies.
But every day, Brittany and her dedicated team are moving the field forward. Progress depends on their daily efforts.
“I, like many, fell into clinical research,” said Brittany, who’s worked in various roles at UF Health since 2011. She joined the UF Health Cancer Institute in 2019 in GI cancers and has worked her way up to manager.
“I absolutely love oncology, being part of research and moving medicine forward,” she said.

But they also provide something much more valuable: hope. By volunteering to participate in clinical trials, patients can help uncover new insights into diseases and improve care for future patients.

Corrielus is a alumna and a graduate of the biology program. During medical school, she participated in the Artificial Intelligence in Medicine research and discovery pathway and received an inaugural Oberndorf Clinical Artificial Intelligence Scholars Award. She also served as the president of the psychiatry club and a clinic officer and health fair officer at the free, student-run Equal Access Clinic Network. But, she says, one of her most important titles is mom.
“When I think about where this journey began — being the first in my family to pursue this path and balance motherhood and caregiving — and compare that to where I stand now, it feels a little surreal,” she said. “I feel immense gratitude and excitement, and I feel especially blessed that I get to cross this finish line with my daughter, Lejla, who has been my biggest cheerleader throughout this entire journey. I hope watching me will inspire her future self to follow her dreams even when it doesn’t seem like the ‘safe’ choice.”
Congratulations to Dr. Corrielus and all who graduated today! #FacesOfUFMed #GatorMD
