CA-3s Drs. Rebecca Toohey and Nicole Nguyen recently spent a month at Black Lion Hospital in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, working alongside anesthesia residents in a meaningful and collaborative exchange.

During their time there, Drs. Toohey and Nguyen gave weekly lectures and simulation sessions for R1–R3 residents, helped facilitate mock oral exams for first-year residents, and participated in hands-on intraoperative teaching across thoracic, pediatrics, vascular, neuro, trauma, and OB/GYN surgeries. They were especially inspired by the creativity, adaptability, and clinical skill the residents demonstrate daily to provide safe anesthesia care in a lower-resource setting.

Drs. Toohey and Nguyen also worked with leaders from the Ethiopian Society of Anesthesia on a campaign promoting awareness and education around labor epidurals. Outside the hospital, Becca and Nicole explored Addis Ababa’s culture, museums, parks, and of course, enjoyed plenty of Ethiopian coffee ☕️!

Thank you for sharing about this unforgettable month filled with learning, teaching, and cultural exchange!
