At age 23, Sri Srinivasan stood to take the oath of American citizenship. Exactly 23 years later, he stood again—this time to take the oath as a federal judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. It was a full-circle moment that transformed his passion for public service into what he called the "ultimate manifestation of belonging."

At the Law School’s Edward H. Levi Distinguished Visiting Jurist Program on May 7, Srinivasan joined Professor David A. Strauss for a lunchtime fireside chat to discuss how being an immigrant shaped his passion for public service, clerking for Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, and his tenure as a judge. David M. Rubenstein, ’73, has made a new $15 million gift to extend support for #UChicagoLaw’s Rubenstein Scholars Program—one of the most distinguished scholarship initiatives in legal education.

Since its founding in 2010, the program has supported more than 220 students through full-tuition scholarships and stipends, helping future lawyers pursue careers in public service, clerkships, private practice, and beyond.

“This kind of sustained investment strengthens the Law School in lasting ways,” said Dean Adam Chilton.

Earlier this month, Judge Frank Easterbrook, ’73, was awarded the 2026 Coase Medal for Outstanding Contributions to Law and Economics by the American Law and Economics Association. Easterbrook, a judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit and former professor at the Law School, received the prestigious honor at a ceremony hosted at the Rubenstein Forum.

The event included remarks from Lee Fennell, the Max Pam Professor of Law and president of the ALEA, and Daniel Fischel, ’77, former dean of the Law School and longtime friend and coauthor of Easterbrook, as well as a keynote address from Easterbrook himself.

“Lawyers always play a key role in darker times. What may discourage our law students about the current state of the world also makes them indispensable. I want our students to know that they can use their law degrees to make a difference.” —Emily Buss, Mark and Barbara Fried Professor of Law

When Emily Buss joined #UChicagoLaw, she brought a decade of experience advocating for children’s rights in Baltimore and Philadelphia’s child welfare systems. Her years on the frontlines—representing at-risk youth and their families, navigating legal bureaucracies—shaped a perspective that continues to inform Buss’s work as a scholar, teacher, and mentor.
