Fieldwork in Waterton Lakes National Park! 🏞️

Last week, our landscape architecture faculty member Dr. Douglas Robb led an international group of wildfire researchers and designers to landscapes affected by the 2017 Kenow Fire. Through site visits, field observation, drawing, and conversations with Parks Canada staff and local Knowledge Keepers, the team explored how fire continues to shape ecological recovery, park management, and design practice in Canada’s Mountain West.

Supported by a Transdisciplinary Connector Grant, Pyro-Mobilities: Communities, Ecologies, and Landscapes on the Move asks what it means to design for coexistence with wildfire in a changing climate.
What if our homes could do more than shelter us?

Dr. Sneha Jain, assistant professor in our School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape, is leading a new research project that explores how indoor environments can better support health and well-being.
Focusing on factors like daylight, air quality, temperature, and noise, this work looks at how these conditions shape how we feel in our homes - impacting comfort, stress, sleep, and overall health.

By centring human experience in design, the project aims to rethink how we approach housing in Calgary and beyond.

Last weekend, SAPL’s Barry Wylant joined graduate students at the University of Calgary’s Barrier Lake Field Station for the Graduate College Idea Lab.

His talk, Design, Design Thinking & Transdisciplinary Framing, explored how design can shape collaborative, cross-disciplinary approaches to complex challenges.

We were pleased to welcome leaders from Canada’s accredited architecture schools to SAPL this week. Hosting all 12 programs in our new building created a meaningful opportunity to connect across institutions, exchange ideas, and reflect on the future of architectural education in Canada.

It was a privilege to open our doors and share the spaces where our students learn, collaborate, and shape the built environment.

What happens to the 90% of museum art that never gets seen?

From our Master of Architecture (MArch) comprehensive design studio in Winter 2026 (ARCH 616), The Archive reimagines a non-collecting museum in Inglewood, Calgary - bringing stored artistic and literary works back into view through an architecture of openness, visibility, and connection.

In this level of the MArch program, students are challenged to integrate design thinking with technical resolution - developing projects that consider structure, material systems, and building performance alongside spatial and conceptual ideas.

Through an open core and continuous sightlines, this proposal explores shell structures that make material, space, and form symbiotic partners in the design process. The structure is formed by a grid of glulam beams held up by steel I-beams, encased in gabion walls of local Rundle limestone. The project engages with local materials in innovative ways while complying with fireproofing and building code standards.

For the third consecutive year, first‑year students in the Bachelor of Design in City Innovation (BDCI) participated in Map the System - a global, interdisciplinary challenge hosted by the University of Oxford that requires teams to apply systems‑thinking approaches to complex social and environmental issues.

This year, BDCI students entered the competition as part of an assignment in DSGN 223: Shaping the Contemporary City I, competing against upper‑year undergraduates, graduate students, PhD candidates, postdoctoral fellows, and recent alumni. Of 110 teams participating at the University of Calgary, BDCI students represented 25% of the university‑wide finalists, with two teams advancing.

At the UCalgary finals hosted by the Hunter Hub for Entrepreneurship, a BDCI team earned 1st place, securing a $2,500 prize and advancing to the Map the System Global Finals in Oxford, UK this July - where they will represent both SAPL and the University of Calgary as part of the Canadian delegation.

These outcomes reflect the strength of SAPL’s deliberately coordinated, transdisciplinary undergraduate curriculum, where skills developed across visualization, computation, entrepreneurship, and design accumulate within a single academic year and position students to compete - and succeed - at global levels.

This achievement also reflects the coordinated efforts of BDCI teaching teams and instructional staff, whose cross‑course collaboration is central to the program’s success.
