We're continuing with messages from our seniors and featuring Brianna DeLima Ifland, who graduated with a degree in studio art in experimental media arts with minors in communication in narrative filmmaking, cinematography, photojournalism, and experimental photography. She also studies Philippine and Asian-American cinema and other elements of diasporic SEA and immigrant culture. Brianna produced her thesis short film, “13 Fruits at the Final Bible Hour.”
Here's what Brianna shared about her time here: “I’ve gotten such a great blend of technical and conceptual education at SoA, and the connections and community I’ve built have paid off in exposing me to a world of mediums and opportunities. Many film schools are organized into communication schools, so studying film through an art world lens instead has given me a really rich understanding of the image and made me a much better filmmaker for it.”
We're so proud of you, Brianna, and we wait to see what you do next! #uarkart
Graduate students Michelle Kamanga, Delaney Rumsey, Elise Boulanger, and Bolu Ezra Ikuemonisan joined Dr. Sytsma in Venice, Italy for the launch of "1922 Revisited: Live Arts Program" during the opening week of the 61st Venice Biennale.
Curated by Dr. Sytsma and produced by Cynthia Post Hunt (Curatorial Producer and Curator of Performance and Artists-in-Residence at the Momentary), the program brought together artists from Nigeria, Italy, Ghana, the United States, Cameroon, France, and Ethiopia to revisit and reimagine the Biennale's 1922 exhibition of African sculpture — restoring the cultural context stripped from those works at the time.
Recently featured in the New York Times, the program's processionals, multidisciplinary performances, and panels transformed Venice into a site of embodied memory, inviting audiences into new ways of knowing rooted in African epistemologies.
Featured artists included Tsedaye Makonnen, Jermay Michael Gabriel, Zora Snake, Bernard Akoi-Jackson, ruby onyinyechi amanze, Wura-Natasha Ogunji, Victoria Udondian, Wilfried Nakeu, among others.
Hosted by Third Space Art Foundation in collaboration with the African Art in Venice Forum and the European Cultural Centre — with partners including The Africa Center, New York; the Centre for Contemporary Art, Lagos, Nigeria; the Foundation for Contemporary Art, Accra, Ghana; the Art History Program, School of Art, University of Arkansas; and NEWMEDIA.
We're so proud of Dr. Sytsma for this impactful work, and to facilitate an unparalleled experience of networking and global arts engagement for our emerging scholars at SoA!

When the Center—whose innovative model united the fine arts department under one roof—first opened in 1951, there were a handful of Calder mobiles hung throughout the building. Written into the budget as "light fixtures," architect Edward Durell Stone knew that these famous works that redefined sculpture would be a perfect fit for a space redefining art education. Calder revolutionized the field of sculpture by bringing movement to an otherwise static art form. 🎨
Curious to learn more? Visit the library or stop by the Center's teaching gallery to see more historic works from the building history M-F 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. or by special appointment (call the SoA main line at ).
Special thanks to U.S. Art for their support.

Opening during our expansion weekend celebration, the new Teaching Artist in Residence Studio in the Hub offers visitors an immersive look at art being made in real time through open studio hours, conversations, and hands-on programs.
Our inaugural Teaching Artist in Residence is Linda Lopez, a Fayetteville-based ceramic artist known for her intricate “furries” — sculptural forms inspired by the natural world. A first-generation artist of Vietnamese and Mexican descent, Lopez was previously featured in State of the Art and Crafting America at Crystal Bridges.
Located in the Hub — Crystal Bridges’ new creative learning center for hands-on artmaking, skill-building, and community connection — the studio invites visitors to engage directly with the artistic process.
Visit Linda Lopez in the Hub June 6–7.
Conway, AR native Maura Hudson is a freshman (rising sophomore!) Studio Art major with a minor in Horticulture. As she wraps up her first year at the School of Art, she's thinking big about where her creative practice can take her.
Maura's work is grounded in the self and the natural world. At the School of Art, she's been busy experimenting with those themes through different mediums from 3D creations to 2D drawings.
"Art has always been a big part of my life, and my time at SoA so far has allowed me to explore that in so many ways, and not only as a hobby, but as a career path. Centering mostly around identity and the natural world, my goal is to share my joy and whimsy with others, and I've had so much fun experimenting with different mediums in the process."
The School of Art's Foundations program is designed to help first-year students discover the many possibilities of their practice. In their first year, students learn about the disciplines available at SoA and practice foundational art-making and critical techniques. For Maura, her experience in Foundations, and the mentors she's found at SoA, are helping define what it means to be an artist who inspires others to find wonder in their everyday lives.

It's that time of year where we share a few messages from members of our graduating class! Today we're celebrating one of our seniors, Sydney, who has graduated from the School of Art with a studio art major with a minor in art history. Although her time at the School of Art is coming to an end, she says her path in the art world is just the beginning!
Here's what Sydney shared about her time here: "The School of Art has prepared me for what's next by allowing me to explore a variety of media and learn how to combine them in meaningful ways. I especially value how the faculty respect each student’s individual creative process and provide guidance that supports our unique artistic styles. The School of Art has had a lasting impact on both my life and my artistic development, and I am truly grateful. Woo Pig!" "
We're proud to see our students walk away with the energy to represent themselves on the global art stage. We can't wait to see what you do in your career, Sydney! #uarkart
