We had a bad start on the right but worked our way into 6th place by going farther course left than anyone else. A late duck on the British put us into dirty air and we never quite got the boat feeling as good again. We had to tack twice to clear our air but the damage was done—we had shuffled ourselves back. Race 7 long version:
In our pre-race lineups, it became clear that the leftmost boat had an advantage with persistent left shifts up the beat.
We started boat-end, worked right, and once we had a clean lane sent it as far left as we could. As everyone tacked onto port we ducked and kept going.
This would pay off as we would get our left shift to cross back in 6th place. We crossed in front of the Russians and looked like we were going to make it across the British but had to duck them at the last second. In the moment, I thought we should have gone for the cross, but in retrospect, I think Archie made the right choice. According to the British just kept getting faster the closer they got to us. But up until the last moments it looked like we had them.
We came out of the duck in p12, but didn’t get the boat moving well afterwards. The Russians, now above us on port tack, were sailing low and fast while the Angolans were sailing higher and slower bow advanced to leewards. We sliped back in the turbulence as the gap narrowed and had to do 2 more tacks to clear our air, unfortunately putting us underneath the port-layline parade.
We spent the downwind surfing the waves to make up as much ground as we could and overtook Angola on the outside. At the last mark we setup for a crossover move to take the inside lane, but I let us get too far advanced on them to make it to the gap.
With how forward our bow was we should have tried to slingshot around the outside but by trying to cross them over we gave up too much distance and conceded our position unfortunately, setting up this awesome photo 📸Nikos Alveramytis

Race 4 on race-day 2 we were able to get clear breeze out to course right and lead most of the first upwind leg before rounding the top mark in 3rd place. We did not play the waves well and dropped way back to 14th on the first downwind. We had decent upwind pace again on leg 3 then lost boats again on the first part of the final downwind. Towards the bottom we started to get into a good rythm with the waves and we we’re able to re-overtake Canada in the final 10 lengths going into the leeward mark getting the inside overlap. We had a close quarters situation with Canada and we came out ahead but ripped our mainsheet block off the deck on the reach to the finish and lost them for an 18th place finish. Showed we can run up front, just need to get quicker downwind so we can stay up there

When I was 9 years old, there was nothing I loved more than taking a laser out to the middle of our corner of the Long Island sound, dry capsizing the boat on its side, sitting on the daggerboard and taking in the scenery. Back when the sport was more about the swimming than the sailing.
It was two years later when I got my first taste of racing sailboats in the Berkshire Cup, and knew there was nothing else I wanted to do more with my life.
As far as I’ve come in this sport in 16 years, I can’t help but look back on that 9 year old Tyler that first fell in love with the game.
Tommorrow morning, when I make my Olympic debut, I’ll be racing for him.

We’re working on communication and driving the boat with feel and our body motions by removing vision and tiller steering from the equation.
Last time we were in Enoshima the swell got as large as 4 meters, and with a typhoon potentially just around the corner we could be in for some bumpy rides and downhill sledding 🛷
