I got my ShutterFest results back, and I’m happy to announce that I ranked 18th out of 97 total speakers! For a first-time speaker with such a unique photography style, that is INSANE.

I attached some of the feedback I received, and I’m truly humbled by it. The comments genuinely made me emotional. I had hoped that my classes would at the very least be informative. But I clearly resonated with people in a way that was much deeper than that. That matters to me more than you can ever know.

With the instability of the last year - recovering from cancer while trying to grow a younger business - there have definitely been moments where I questioned whether I could truly reach the highest levels of the photography industry. This experience affirmed that I can.

That said, I already know where I can improve next year. I need to be more prepared with the logistics of hanging my neon signs and more organized with how I structure group shooting segments. I also ran into tech issues that prevented Lightroom from connecting to the monitor, so instead of properly projecting my editing process, I had to physically hold my laptop up in front of a large auditorium. Still, I didn’t let it disrupt my flow too much and thankfully, the after-hours shoots went off without a hitch.

What filled me with the most pride was seeing the visible excitement and determination from the people attending my classes. Helping photographers open themselves up to new creative perspectives, build confidence in a wider variety of locations, and stop being afraid of shooting in the dark - that meant everything to me. My goal wasn’t simply to educate. It was to empower.

I could honestly say so much more, but I’m trying not to write an essay lol. In an event filled with some of the best photographers in the world, the fact that I stood out this much made one thing very clear:

I’m not going anywhere. So pay attention.

A rainbow decided to show up, and my camera and I were ready. It had been storming all day, so this was supposed to be a football shoot in the rain - but then this happened. Of course, I had to capitalize. We ended up getting some incredible shots, and I’m glad everything lined up the way it did.

Just wrapped up a week as a speaker at ShutterFest - one of the most impactful weeks of my life.

Being chosen as a speaker among titans in my industry is one of the greatest honors of my life. I know I’ve worked hard to earn my place, but seeing my banner hanging from the rafters, being approached by familiar and new faces excited to meet & learn from me, and connecting with other incredible photographers & speakers who not only appreciated my work but offered invaluable advice - I’ve rarely felt this seen, much less celebrated.

I taught a class on neon photography and was blown away by the turnout, especially as a first-time speaker with a distinct visual style. Watching attendees light up as they learned to capture striking neon images using prisms and fractals was genuinely cathartic. It reinforced the validity of my artistic vision in a way I’ll never forget. Many attendees even told me it was their favorite - and most unique - class they’ve ever taken at ShutterFest.

I also led an after-hours shoot at the Neon Museum of St. Louis, an absolutely stunning venue where I felt like a kid in a candy store. My passion poured out as I guided attendees through using neon for cinematic storytelling. Huge thanks to the owner, Deborah, for allowing us to shoot there and for providing many of the neon pieces used during my class.

Later, I hosted another after-hours shoot at The Wheel Park of St. Louis - a boardwalk-style, carnival-esque setting where I walked attendees through storytelling, scale, and finding dramatic light in everyday environments. It was an absolute blast.

This entire experience has been deeply emotional. Life after cancer has been expensive and challenging, and it took the support of my community to make this trip possible. Being at ShutterFest reaffirmed something I needed to feel again: that I have a place in the larger world - and that people are ready to meet me wherever I go.
I’m a Dallas-based photographer. I did my own post-cancer photoshoot at Six Flags.

I was diagnosed with Stage 3 Hodgkin’s Lymphoma on May 2024. I beat it on Nov 2024.

So to commemorate the most difficult period of my life, I did what I do best: took some badass pictures.

I hope you guys enjoy them.
