Sculptural Vases by Kodomari Ryo

We have some wonderful Kodomari Ryo pieces exclusively in UK. Visit our stockroom in Brighton to view them in person.
Kodomari's experimentalism seeps through every aspect of his work, but it is most evident in the sculptural assemblage of the clay.
Have a wonderful weekend ❤️ ✨

One of these Harmony Birds plates is still available. If you've had your eye on Hiroko Aono-Billson's stunning golden slipware pieces, the countdown is on. Be sure to take a look before they're gone by the end of June.

I can sense footie time creeping into the living room tonight... ⚽️😂
.
Browse these glorious pieces by Ichikawa Takehito, a part of our SUMMER collection. 🏺 Hope you all enjoy, and have a wonderful weekend ❤️ ✨
.
Takehito Ichikawa is a wood artist based in Nagoya, Japan. His practice is rooted in a long engagement with woodworking, following earlier experience in furniture making and traditional Buddhist carpentry.

Ichikawa draws inspiration from the natural world, as well as art, culture and architecture, fusing Eastern/Western, and classical/contemporary visual values, to inform the sculptural clarity and quiet presence of his work.
Some of his work strongly remind us of Greek urns and columns, others of Buddhist cosmological imagery.

The things he has seen and experienced, the path he has walked, and the emotions he has felt all find their way into his woodcarvings, the artist says. If that is true, can I be the only one who wishes to see, if only once, the journey that has shaped him?

Images from "Miyawaki Ayako Retrospective: I saw, I cut, I applied". Japanese/English language edition. Tokyo Station Gallery exhibition catalogue 2025. A few copies are available from ' Japan room.
.
Resourcefulness – Miyawaki created her pieces from scraps and fabric remnants that others might have overlooked or discarded. Her work began with a collection she inherited from her mother-in-law, which she continued to build on over time, incorporating everything from vintage hand-dyed silk and handwoven linen ikat to lace, cords, and even coffee filters.
.
Today, practices such as visible mending, up-cycling, and reusing old textiles are being celebrated in new ways. Seen through this lens, her work feels remarkably ahead of its time. I like to think she wasn’t trying to be revolutionary; she was simply following her heart and doing what felt right to her.
.
Miyawaki Ayako (1905–1995) is a textile artist who worked in the post-war Japan. Born in Tokyo, her creative journey started in her 40's and she was entirely self-taught.
Making use of her collection of waste fabrics, Miyawaki depicted/ constructed/ designed images of everyday objects, rendered through needlework especially appliqué. She called her works "Nuno-e", meaning, drawings by cloths.
Miyawaki’s works were exhibited widely both in Japan and overseas including in the USA and France. Many of them are held in Toyota Municipal Museum of Art.
Miyawaki was an avid writer and left volumes of diaries accompanied with her cloths-works and watercolour drawings that spanned several decades. Find more

Sometimes you are captivated by an artwork—by its aching, indescribable longing, and by the intricate details and tenderness that human hands somehow found a way to express. She creates as if singing her own personal hymn, and its melody resonates with countless others.

Flower 104 Minuet by Inada Satoko

Inada Satoko is an artist based in Japan.
Inada’s practice begins with a personal internal dialogue — a quiet reflection on the emotional landscapes we carry within us. Working primarily with wooden panels, she treats the surface as a space for prayer and memory, where delicate floral forms meet the structured silhouette of a dress.

Through layering, texture, and delicate brushwork, fragmented memories are deconstructed and gently rebuilt into tactile compositions. Each work explores emotional topographies while seeking to transform everyday experiences into something intimate, contemplative, and quietly sacred.

is especially delighted to introduce Black Persimmon (Kurogaki) pieces created by Ichikawa Takehito.
.
Kurogaki, a rare form of spalted persimmon wood, has been treasured in Japan since ancient times. Highly valued for both its scarcity and its extraordinary grain, it is distinguished by dramatic black markings that create contrasts, swirling patterns, and subtle gradations reminiscent of Japanese sumi-e ink paintings.
.
Ichikawa's works are not only beautiful; they possess a solemnity and even a sense of spiritual mystery that feels almost religious. Even a small piece such as a ring holder has the power to transform the atmosphere around it. There is an intensity to these works that never grows tiresome—one can look at them every day and still remain captivated.
.
The things he has seen and experienced, the path he has walked, and the emotions he has felt all find their way into his woodcarvings, the artist says. If that is true, can I be the only one who wishes to see, if only once, the journey that has shaped him?
