Born and raised in Ankara, Türkiye, Dökmen Koch moved to London at 17 to study art and design. She lived in London for 18 years and moved to Berlin in February 2024 with her daughter and husband. Since moving to Berlin, she has explored what it means to be from a country and to be Turkish, British, or German. What does it mean to be Turkish in the UK, and what does it mean in Germany? After all, being Turkish in London differs from being Turkish in Berlin. And being in Germany as a Turk who is also a naturalised Brit is something else.

The exhibition is about immigration and integration.
Born and raised in Ankara, I moved to London at 17 to study art and design. I lived in London for 18 years and moved to Berlin in February 2024 with my daughter and husband. Since moving to Berlin, I have explored what it means to be from a country and to be Turkish, British, or German. What does it mean to be Turkish in the UK, and what does it mean in Germany? In my work, I question and explore the influence of a city and a country on one’s identity. As someone who has lived between Ankara, London, and Berlin, I need to share my work to better understand myself. As an artist with a fashion design background, I work with fabrics and colours. My identity question is in the flags, a worldwide recognised visual, textile, and colourful representation of a country’s identity.

Migration and integration are often discussed in terms of statistics, legalities, and economic impact, but “Re:HUMANIZE” aims to shift the focus back to the individuals at the heart of these journeys.
Through diverse artworks,the exhibition explores the fundamental questions of identity, belonging, and self-worth.
