Welcome to TUD 👋 As the winter semester begins, a number of new professors will also be joining us at TUD. The Faculty of Mathematics alone welcomes three new professors: Mario Kummer, Patrick Mehlitz, and Markus Schmidtchen. At the Faculty of Medicine, there have been two appointments: Eva Rettinger and Peter M. Spieth. At the same time, there has been one new appointment each at the (Remmer Sassen) and the Faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering (Giang Nguyen).
Throughout the year, the university will also be welcoming a wealth of outstanding researchers to our midst. The addition of these new members of staff is part of the university’s efforts to bolster cutting-edge research and teaching. 🧑🏫 Regularly, we’ll be introducing our newly appointed professors, giving you the chance to get to know them a little better.

Welcome to TUD! 👋 Yesterday, we officially welcomed the new students to our university in the Audimax. Over 6,100 young people are beginning their studies at TUD in the 2026/27 winter semester, including nearly 1,600 international students from 104 countries. The absolute highlight of the ceremony: The surprise performance by, who will also be performing at the stadium in Dresden next summer. And of course, our gave another fantastic performance!

Starkregen und Überflutungen, Dürreperioden und Hitze sind trotz ihrer Gegensätzlichkeit Auswirkungen der klimatischen Veränderungen. Dr. Astrid Ziemann von der Professur für Meteorologie hat uns in der Doku erklärt, dass ein Temperaturanstieg von einem Grad dazu führt, dass die Luft 7 Prozent mehr Feuchtigkeit aufnehmen kann.
„Es wird so sein, dass die Niederschläge global insgesamt zunehmen. Jedoch nicht gleichmäßig als Landregen, sondern die Extreme werden sich verstärken“, hat uns Ziemann erklärt. Sie forscht gerade am Geberbach in Dresden daran, welchen Einfluss naturnahe Gebiete in der Stadt auf den Wasserhaushalt und das Mikroklima haben.
Mit dem Grundwasser-Experten Prof. Andreas Hartmann haben wir darüber gesprochen, ob Deutschland langfristig das Wasser ausgeht. Er kann da aktuell noch Entwarnung geben: „Generell geht uns das Grundwasser nicht aus. Wir haben durch den Klimawandel allerdings Veränderungen in der Wassernutzung und natürlich im Wasserbedarf.“
Lokal, in sogenannten Grundwasserbilanzrisikogebieten, kommt es deshalb bereits zu Herausforderungen. Eine solche Region ist die Lausitz, wo Prof. Hartmann forscht. Er will wissen, welchen Einfluss die Tagebauten und Teichwirtschaften auf das Grundwasser haben – denn das Wasser der Lausitz hat sogar einen Einfluss auf die Trinkwasserversorgung Berlins.
Der Wassermangel verursacht Konflikte – weltweit, aber auch in Deutschland. Prof. Anna Holzscheiter hat mit uns im Interview darüber gesprochen. „Sowohl zu viel als auch zu wenig Wasser führen dazu, dass es in Territorien, in denen Menschen um diese Ressource kämpfen oder existenziell von ihr abhängig sind, zu Konflikten kommen kann.“

In zahlreichen Workshops, Laborbesuchen und Experimenten setzten sich die Teilnehmenden u. a. mit automatisierter Mobilität, Luftverkehrssicherheit und der Steuerung des Zugverkehrs auseinander. 🚦 Wissenschaftler:innen der TUD vermittelten ihnen dabei einen realistischen Einblick in ihre Forschungsschwerpunkte und in die Studiengänge an der Fakultät Verkehrswissenschaften "Friedrich List". Mit auf dem Programm standen außerdem Exkursionen ins und zur. 🚃
Ein bis zwei Mal im Jahr richtet die Schulkontaktstelle der TUD das MINT-EC-Camp zu wechselnden Themen für Schüler:innen ab 16 Jahren aus.

Der Bau des Recycling-Floßes hat sich über mehrere Jahre gestreckt. Durch Corona kam es zu einer längeren Pause. Entstanden ist das Floß in Pirna, wo das Institut für Abfall- und Kreislaufwirtschaft der TUD seinen Sitz hat.
Dort lernen Studierende im Bachelor „Hydrowissenschaften: Wasserwirtschaft, Hydrologie und Kreislaufwirtschaft“ und im Master „Kreislaufwirtschaft und Ressourceneffizienz“, wie sich die Kreislaufwirtschaft verbessern lässt. Das Ziel: mehr Abfallprodukte wiederverwenden.
Der Hauptbestandteil – also die Balken, die das Floß bilden – besteht aus einem Kunststoffgemisch, das aus dem Gelben Sack gewonnen wird. Daneben wurden alte Fässer als Schwimmkörper oder aussortierte Salatschüsseln als Bugspitzen verwendet.
In Pirna wurde das Floß auch erstmals zu Wasser gelassen. Auf der ersten Fahrt wurde dort seine Fahrtüchtigkeit überprüft, anschließend folgte die Verlegung in den Hafen in Dresden.
Von Dresden aus startete die geplante Forschungsfahrt nach Magdeburg. Zum Start gab es einem Medientermin mit großem Interesse.
Zwei Wissenschaftler:innen an Bord waren damit beschäftigt, regelmäßig Proben in der Elbe zu nehmen, um Verunreinigungen im Wasser zu messen. Ein Fokus lag dabei auf den Zuflüssen in die Elbe.
