Barossa Bolt: A Decade On

Ten years ago I captured what would become one of my most significant images. I've chased light across the world from Iceland to Antarctica, but this shot wasn't of auroras or icebergs—just a humble farmland scene minutes from where I grew up in the Barossa Valley.

I almost missed it. After one storm passed, I spotted another cell approaching. Grabbing my infrared camera, I found this lone tree and lined it up with the storm. The infrared turned the leaves brilliant white against the looming clouds. When lightning struck, everything fell into place, then I ran for cover as hail started falling!

This frame went on to win International Landscape Photograph of the Year 2015. What makes it special is that it happened right near home in the Barossa, proving extraordinary scenes are sometimes in your own backyard.

The evening of October 11th turned out to be one of my aurora chasing highlights this year. After seeing a huge aurora in the forecast, I knew it was worth putting in the effort. Earlier that day, my regular cloud forecasting apps showed Coles Bay and Freycinet with the clearest conditions in the state.

I've talked myself out of the 5-hour return drive more than once for aurora shoots, and nearly did again this time. During my back-and-forth deliberating, I mentioned it to Jo and asked if she'd be keen to come - and surprisingly, she said yes. Maybe she saw the excitement in my eyes, or maybe she just felt sorry for me - either way, we were heading out.

I thought the car park might be packed given all the media coverage, but when we arrived there were just a couple of cars with people heading out. We had the spot to ourselves, at least for a while. As we walked down to the rocks, the skies lit up in an awe-inspiring display that still gives me goosebumps writing this. Another perfect evening under the stars with my favourite person in the world.

Image is a newly released one taken in Patagonia in early January this year. I was fortunate to get some good light, although I did have to work pretty hard for it!

One of those jobs where you pinch yourself.

This one went on to win gold, 13 film festival awards & 4th place at the world tourism awards last year in Valencia.

A few favourite frames from when I travelled with around for over 3 weeks adventuring and capturing it in all its glory.

A “job” that I’ll remember forever.

Can’t thank everyone enough for letting us to be able to do these incredible adventures.

I was incredibly lucky to witness many beautiful scenes last year, but it was hard to top this one. The beams of Aurora Australis swirled in the sky as a cloud inversion flowed down over Cradle Cirque. Barn Bluff, one of Tasmania's tallest mountains, stood still, just like me, and we took it all in. The biggest gift of being a photographer is not only being able to replay these scenes in my mind whenever I like, but also being able to share them with you.

Dark sky nights in Tasmania's mountains. Here an incredible dolerite tower resembling a hand or claw points upwards as if it's grasping at the milky way galaxy. Visiting locations like this in the dark isn't the easiest work but it is incredibly rewarding. My car was covered in a healthy layer of ice when I got back to it, indicating that it was a chilly as it felt. I think my hands have defrosted by now. Check out my reels for the timelapse.
