Hadley’s grandpa (we call him Papa) has a top 10 favorite song list of all time. Cyndi Lauper appears not once, but twice. And as I looked for a suggested song for this picture, the immediate suggestion was “True Colors.” A fitting choice, although perhaps a little too on the nose.

As I scrolled down, this cover of “Time After Time” sat patiently in the queue and I know for certain the original recording is on Papa’s list.

How serendipitous.
We have good days.

We have bad days.

But it’s ok… she’s the sweetest thing ever.

When we dream about the future, profound disability isn’t typically on the “to do list.” It’s not the life we imagine. But sometimes, your loved one ends up there. Or maybe even you.

We then have a choice. Wallow in despair or let go the plan we envisioned. When we embrace reality, something happens.

Acceptance is the gateway to peace.

And peace is a pathway to happiness.
It’s funny how a little adversity shapes your values. I stopped chasing grandeur a long time ago: the company and well being of this crew is about all I really value. Life is about connection; may we all find our people, be it the family we have or the one we assemble. #throwbackthursday
The dogs are probably Hadley’s best friends.

The ones who seek her out.
The ones who play along side her.
The ones she recognizes.
The ones who comfort her when she’s distressed.
The ones she recognizes.
The ones (Bo at least) who wakes up to her alarm bells to check on her.
The ones that rest by her side.

May we all have such endearing friendships.
What they did is theirs. To each their own. It’s their right.

But we have to look at what they chose to say. When they spoke publicly to offer a “why” to millions of people that echoed to million more, opening countless conversations about the intersection of a myriad of issues? That was a sign to everyone. And words matter.

The way society talks about disability is alarming. Ableism is so prevalent that it is ingrained and a core rationalization about worth, the human experience, and happiness. The implications stretch far beyond the Down Syndrome community, which in my interactions is uniquely unified and supportive. Words caused real harm, were themselves “objectively shitty,” and demonstrated both a misunderstanding and misrepresentation of a specific diagnosis and disability at large.

Everyone jumps to the hypothetical “what I would do.” Until that hypothetical becomes a reality, it doesn’t hold much weight. The broader question is really what can society do? To educate and foster genuine understanding, to shift attitudes towards disabilities big and small, provide meaningful and equitable support, all while preserving choice and individual liberty. All signs suggest we have work to do.
My take and my take alone: you can only control what you can control. Beyond that, your attitude shapes your experience. Make it a good weekend.
Our family is so excited to be part of Look At Me, Look What I Can Do!, a one-of-a-kind children’s photobook celebrating kids and teens with disabilities through real-life photography and empowering stories.

The author, Angelea Yoder, is a Nashville-based photographer and disability advocate who was born with a rare condition called VACTERL association. As a child, she never met anyone who looked like her or shared her experiences. Today, she’s making it her mission to change that for children around the world.

Every child deserves to see themselves represented, to know their differences are something to celebrate, and to never feel alone in their journey.

If this message speaks to you, please consider supporting and sharing the Kickstarter with your family, friends, and community. Together, we can help place this book into the hands of families, classrooms, libraries, hospitals, and organizations that need it most. 💛
To meet the needs of all our children, we sometimes break up the family to travel. Our medically complex daughter commands certain logistical considerations. Our boys deserve opportunities that stretch their world views and challenge them where they are at. One size does not fit all. And that’s ok.
There’s a shorter explanation: “It’s just bones.” And there’s a much longer explanation, too.
Mad respect to all you lion moms and dads out there, but we over here giraffe 🦒 ing it up. Little one may be fragile, but we’ll always stand tall, be on the look out, and kick danger to oblivion. Oh, and we can laugh at ourselves, too. #unstoppable #sia #lions #giraffe #giraffes
