The theme I had in mind during this painting was "sacrifice". I wanted her pedestal to look more like an altar, with votive candles placed there by admirers and that central heart motif, bleeding gold.
I also tried to walk a very fine line with her facial expression, between "pained" and "relieved".
Out of all 3 paintings, I like her hands the most 🤣! I think the marble-like translucency of her skin came out the best there, and I loved painting those tiny irregular reflections across the surfaces.

I wanted this cover to feel darker and more dangerous than the others of the series, so I opted to have one eye peering out from behind Max's spear.
I love painting shiny things, so doing that golden spear and snake was a great time.
Also, as always, I'm a huge sucker for painting all those ligaments and tendons in hands, so that was double-awesome!
It's important that we artists maintain integrity, so I don't want to condemn asking people or questioning whether or not they use AI generation in their art.
Witch hunts can get taken too far and hurt legitimate artists, but we also have a right to know that the things we love (and in many instances pay for) are made faithfully and honestly.
Over the past few months, I've seen suspicions that my artwork is AI generated, and with this most recent release of cover art from a very publicized series (and likely increasingly with any new projects going forward), these claims are getting more common unless I nip it in the bud and address them directly. So here we go!
This has been one of my absolute favorite projects to work on IN MY LIIIIFE, and Carissa is a national treasure. ❤️🎉
