In this playful elongated composition, I placed garlic in various states of carefully orchestrated repose, showcasing their diverse facets. From crunchy goldening skin and smooth alabaster cloves, to hairy roots reminiscent of Van Gogh’s sunflower florets, set against the soothing dusty turquoise of my studio wall.
This piece is an exploration of dynamic balance sought through the placement of tonal shapes, and in that sense is more akin to an abstract painting than a literal scene of domestic life. However, the tender familiarity of garlic and the beloved lion headed soup bowl conjure memories of a kitchen shelf where mothers would scatter bits and pieces that were less perishable. Allium and ceramics are fine subjects for the slower, meditative painter, as they are not in a rush to ‘catch a train’ like our more fugitive fruits and flowers, and enjoy a relaxed conversation.

I’ve painted this lion-adorned soup bowl three times now, and like a good friend you grow more and more fond of them as time goes by. I enjoyed exploring the differences in texture and colour between the crunchy, yellowing head of garlic, and the cool, smooth reflective ceramic surface of the bowl; both ‘white’ at a glance but so full of nuance.
I’ve learnt that in still life you must be able to fall in love with things...you need to see their personality, and the ‘life’ they do possess as objects that serve humanity in various ways. We paint ourselves in those varied surfaces just as much as the subjects themselves. What do we choose, and why do we choose them? Do we paint in real kitchens, bathrooms or studies, capturing reality? Or are we pretending to create a real scene like a painterly movie maker? Or do we acknowledge the staged aspect as an integral part of the art form, like flower arranging or abstract painting? I think I fall into the latter camp. The idea of the (in)significant object has fascinated me ever since a project by that same clever name during the first year of my BFA; how can something seemingly so humble and ordinary mean so much to us? What do those items speak about, hint at, or associate with in our minds, perhaps subconsciously? And what kind of emotional experience can an ensemble of shape and colour make us feel? Many people hold space for witness testimony documented in the bible, acknowledging that there may be nuggets of truth within the stories, yet when highly credible individuals - trained observers - describe anomalous sightings, we often disregard them or explain them away. While I don’t wish to conflate the two things excessively without adequate knowledge, and there is definitely an illusive element to the phenomenon which tantalises us with unanswerable questions, my point is that we need to have an open mind to the possibility that there is much more to life than we may know.
The idea that non-human intelligences exist and have engaged with humanity would arguably be the biggest revelation in history, IF true. Sometimes you can find breadcrumbs, or even obvious references to modern day UFOs in classical paintings, which would have been interpreted through cultural and religious narratives of their time, such as angelic encounters, like “Madonna of the UFO” as it's affectionately called, which I hunted down like an amateur Robert Langdon last winter in Palazzo Vecchio, Florence.
This large figurative painting I’m working on in my studio in the first slide, currently at the beginning of its underpainting, is specifically inspired by the testimony of whistleblower Jake Barber, who claims to have worked covertly in the recovery of downed (or ‘donated’) allegedly non-human origin objects, most notably “the egg”. Themes of consciousness and spirituality as well as ‘nuts and bolts’ technology converge in this personification of my hope for their hypothetical intent.

In the spirit of a full day at a Florentine atelier, the day will be split into the two genres: portrait class will run from 9am-12pm, and still life from 1pm-4pm (weekdays only). A discount applies for enrollment into both workshops.
I will be painting too, offering real time insights into: composition, analysis of light and shadow, creating mood, drawing using the sight-size technique (please wear comfortable shoes!), palette organisation and colour mixing, blocking-in, paint handling, edges, building a sense of form and atmosphere, and more.
Tuition is tailored to the individual’s needs, however some prior experience working from life is advantageous.

Private Collection
Raised in Florence and of half Ethiopian and half Italian heritage, Andrea possesses beautiful aspects that speak of diverse cultures. Sometimes being from two places can make us feel like being from nowhere in entirety. Other times it makes the world feel like one big neighbourhood, and which two streets our parents come from doesn’t really matter.
I was inspired by a painting called “Prince William Nii Nortey Dowuona” by Gustav Klimt, 1897, which you may have seen doing the rounds online recently. Interestingly there is also a companion painting by Franz von Matsch called “Portrait of an African Man”. I particularly took cue from Klimt’s composition, which utilises roughly painted fabric in contrast with smoothly painted skin, draping around the figure and helping the viewer to traverse the image.
I painted this piece in sight size under natural light (in wildly varying spring conditions!) from my studio in Pontedera, Tuscany, while teaching a private portrait workshop, very much in the spirit of a painter’s apprenticeship from the past. While developing my own practice I’m also sharing my knowledge, which I find deeply fulfilling. Grazie Andrea and Dylan for a great two weeks!

And here are some thoughts on painting, prompted by the strangeness of sharing a detail of something designed to be viewed as a whole with other elements.
My interest lies in capturing the intersection between the honesty and beauty of what is seen, under the governance of a singular indirect daylight light source from a relatively high angle, and standing far back from the subject to take it in as a whole. What painterly choices are necessary to make that impression click into place from a distance, and therefore recreate in a satisfying way the experience of looking at someone or something, naturally with your own eyes, not a camera lens; as you sit on a couch opposite someone, or walk through a room and turn momentarily to glimpse something that strikes you as beautiful. That arresting sensation.
It is much less about recreating the sense of form you would discern by standing close to the subject, or touching it, or conceptualising it through study. Although, you can still perceive a degree of form from a distance, so it is still a consideration, and having absorbed those lessons will serve extremely well in the translation of colour values and edges seen from further back.
Ironically, we must look with sustained curiosity and investigation at the subject, utilising both far and mid distances to the subject, to orchestrate a sense of the impression from afar; a balancing act of edges that brings the picture into the right overall hierarchy of focus.
For me, that's where the most interest and purpose is, for the vital beauty of things is fleeting and no modern technology can capture it the way a human with a brush and colour can. There's a lifetime of personal exploration and discovery there.
