Thank you for having me, Kyoto University!

I spoke about the loss of my grandpa, the river and fly fishing, iron bacteria and celadon glaze, and the intersection of craft and design. And how, for me, it all boils down to noticing and finding wonder.

I didn’t take many photos with my eyes open but the second photo shows my sigh of relief after the talk 😅

More to come soon ~

Thank you and the tedxkyotou members for seeing a story in me 🤍

THANK YOU

From what I’ve read, Iron-oxidizing bacteria are tiny organisms that get energy by turning dissolved iron into iron oxide. When iron-rich groundwater meets oxygen at natural springs, these bacteria speed up rust formation, and show up as red or orange sludge along rivers and streams. Although it can look out of place in a stream, It is not harmful to the water or wildlife. I often come across these pools in Hanase, where spring water is very abundant.

Humans can also oxidize iron, but we usually do it quickly using heat or chemicals. The bacteria work slowly and naturally, at low temperatures, producing extremely fine iron particles. The iron bacteria probably also contains organic matter and other minerals such as phosphorus, calcium, and manganese. Together, all of this somehow creates my ideal spectrum of blue to green.
This is four generations of Japanese in Hawaii. I’m the fifth, born in California. My great-great-grandparents immigrated to Hawaii in the 1890s, when many in Japan were struggling with poverty and food shortages to work on the sugar cane plantations. I would love to know more about what they experienced in Japan during that time.

My understanding of my blood has always been capped at Hawaii. I have no concept of who or what my family was before Hawaii, but I know my family came from Hiroshima, Fukushima, and Fukuoka and I’m curious to dig deeper.

Now that I live in Japan, I’m realizing bits of Japanese culture in myself and my family that have somehow trickled down through five generations of living a life completely opposite. So much is foreign and different but I find it interesting to find the pieces that have remained.

One of my ongoing projects is trying to locate any distant relatives who never left Japan. Wondering if anyone has tried searching for family in Japan without knowing any relatives?
Moving water — something I can stare at for hours on end. One of my passions, fly fishing, is studying moving water. Seams, riffs, foam, eddies, deep pools… you’re studying the water for a certain (seemingly random) pattern where trout would rather be. And now that I’m learning how to surf, it’s giving me a whole new form of moving water to study and stare at for hours. After long days of fishing or surfing, I can still see the moving water when I close my eyes, like a double exposure. Does this happen to anyone else? There’s a certain feeling of excitement I get when I see and hear moving water, and I’m forever trying to capture it. Sometimes through photos, video, and now ceramic. I made these sake cups as a souvenir for my friends, something to remind us of the Montana and Idaho rivers we watched for 10 hours a day.

Different sized Moving Water cups coming soon.

The first two photos were taken by the amazing, arigatou for the photos.
