Honey, I Shrunk The Washing: Part Two

I recorded this the day after trying YouTube’s recommended technique – thought you might like to see... A success? Ish?
Is it harder to be optimistic as we get older? How many of us feel that, as we've walked down the path of life, we find ourselves becoming more cynical? When I got back from the holidays I had this thought - A goal I have for for 2026 is to think like Lyla – and take inspiration from her boundless optimism 💛
How many bags is too many? I’m operating on the principle of as many as my wardrobe will tolerate, and ignoring any suggestion of a cull… I keep bags because they’re tied to chapters. I remember the year each one arrived and what life looked like then. Do you keep pieces for the memories they carry? Or are you on team purge?

I’ve heard everybody is talking about 2016…
Honey, I Shrunk The Washing…

Have you got any tips for shrunken clothes? Lyla’s Missoni top emerged from the wash looking more suited to a doll than my daughter. YouTube recommends soaking, hair conditioner and pins. Wish me luck…
Have you ever tried gratitude journalling? I find it’s something we’re all advised to do at some point or another, and whether or not it works really depends on how much emotion we invest into it. Scribbled mechanically, it’s just ink on paper… but if we use it as an opportunity for introspection it becomes a lens for noticing the good in your life…

I’ve practised gratitude journaling on and off over the years, and this year I want to really tune into myself and be consistent with it. I’d love you to join me in challenging yourself to really connect with your emotions – here are some of the things I’m grateful for, let's uplift each other 💛
If the great greyification – of wardrobes, skies, and everything in between – is leaving you a little deflated, it may be time to intervene with colour. For me, that means a flash of neon via my gloves and Daffy’s lead. Sometimes it’s the smallest details that lift us up the most…
At the beginning of this year, I wrote a list of intentions and a small note to self. I also set up a little altar in my bedroom and made some clear commitments.

I’m really enjoying my morning meditation (not masturbation…). I’ve switched to one called Deep Thought by David G on the Insight Timer app, and it’s been a lovely way to arrive at the day. I lie under my LED light, then move over to the small altar space I’ve created in my bedroom. On one side are my intentions for who I want to invite into my life; on the other are my intentions for how I want to show up at work. Each day, I sit there for a few minutes, read something from a book, and simply sit with myself.

So far, this is working well. I haven’t written my gratitude list as consistently as I’d like, and I haven’t watercoloured as much as I intended – only once since the New Year – but it is only day eleven. I’m trying to stay aware rather than critical.

I’ve also been thinking a lot about how I want to buy clothes differently this year. Because of that, I decided to start another Instagram account where I’ll occasionally list things I’m selling. The idea is to use only that money as my clothing budget. I’m going to take it one day at a time and see how it goes, but I feel good about the intention. I’ve had similar intentions in previous years, but I’ve never been this concrete – setting up a Vinted account, creating a separate Instagram, and actually putting things up.

I’m deliberately not giving myself a timeframe this time. That was a mistake I made before: being so focused on getting to the end of the month just so I could “prove” how I wanted to shop. It didn’t feel healthy for me.

How are you doing with how you’re setting yourself up for the year? I’ve found it helpful to share some of this with other people – it seems to reinforce my commitment. If you feel like sharing some of yours here, it might do the same for you.
How much wool is too much wool? I have amassed a pretty extensive mountain wardrobe over many winters at my family’s home in Samoëns. Clothes to wear on piste, off piste, at après, and countless jumpers to wear to the local market. Among them are a few of my father’s, now 74 years old, which is both a testament to good wool and the virtue of looking after one’s clothes. A triumph of longevity, if not restraint – which means a cull is overdue…

This is my happy place. We’re so lucky that our house in the mountains has been in the family for years, and it holds an unmistakable sense of nostalgia and cosiness for me – particularly when Lyla and I are there together. We’ve filled it with our favourite things and nothing brings me more joy than when it’s filled with our favourite people, too. Until recently I was renting it out and wasn’t actually able to stay very often, so taking the time to come here and make even more memories is a goal for 2026 ❤️
