My dream rainbow girl has made our family feel so whole and complete I can’t believe how lucky we are 🥰 I’m going to hibernate for a little while now and just stare at her non stop and try not to cry every time Fred cuddles and kisses his little sister 🥹

I did an art foundation and ended up doing a fashion degree because it seemed more ‘vocational’ - I hated it and should have quit in the first term but I hadn’t yet discovered the magic and liberation of quitting shit you hate so I stuck with it and ended up doing various fashion retail related office jobs through my 20s
By the time I was 30 I quit office work and was teaching yoga and discovering Handpoke tattooing and by some miracle organically grew an amazingly creative career as a tattooist which I ADORE - but I’ve always had a longing to paint again
Apart from the occasional sketch here and there I hadn’t challenged myself to complete a whole portrait since way back in my art foundation days, and now that I have started teaching others to Handpoke I felt like it was time to put my money where my mouth is an leap into the vulnerability of being a beginner again
This piece took something like 15-20 hours of figuring it out, getting it wrong, getting frustrated and learning the hard way (for some reason I seem to stubbornly self-teach myself everything, maybe I should just take a course…) but it was worth it and I’m excited to make my next one already

We first planned a wrapping bracelet to connect to both sides of her beautiful mandala tattoo which I handpoked for her a few years ago - (see the drawing on the third slide) But this just DID NOT work at all, once I’d actually drawn and stencilled it on to the skin the bracelet strands looked like spiders legs and we were both as sure as each other that it was an absolute NO!
So - I drew a whole new design, a symbol chain instead, to be placed on the other side, the outer side of her forearm
It was so worth literally going back to the drawing board for this one because we rescued her lovely mandala from being ruined and made a stunning new piece which was actually so full of meaning and spontaneous creativity ✨
