During our California trip, we spent a weekend in Palm Springs and visited the Living Desert Zoo & Gardens. Before visiting I had no idea that it was a Certified Autism Center, so it was a wonderful surprise to see sensory bags available as soon as we entered. Little did I know what other sensory inclusive wonders were waiting for us! โฃ

Right off the bat I noticed how quiet the zoo and gardens were. Initially I thought that was because we came later in the day but, but soon realized through the many Quiet Areas by that it was intentional ๐โฃ

Roo loved the park so much that we were basically the last people to leave at closing time. โฃ

Here are a few quick tips for your visit:โฃ
1) Plan for 3-4 hours minimum! There are so many exhibits and gardens to explore. We only had 3 hours before closing and missed seeing a lot ๐ฌโฃ

2) Consider sensory sensitivities such as smell, sunlight, or increased sound from crowds. โฃ
โฃ
3) Build in breaks! has more quiet areas than I've seen in a long time, so take advantage of them. โฃ

4) Use Zoo maps & Social Stories to reduce anxiety and plan out your day. โฃ

5) Rent/bring any mobility aids or wheelchairs. There is a lot of ground to cover and even with a plethora of benches it can be helpful to have a mobility aid. โฃ

We've been full-time stationary RV living since June 2020, and overall it has been amazing. But the winters can be brutal and with all the freezing this winter Emerald-Jade sprung a leak ๐ซ. RV shops usually have a long waiting list, so after over a month, she's finally headed to the shop ๐๐พโฃ

1) Bodily Autonomy- Her choice to get a haircut was solely her decision so she was excited about it!โฃ

2) Build hype about the haircut date- We put the date on the calendar and had a countdown.โฃ

3) Choose a kid's salon- I knew there would be tears so I did a lot of research to ensure the stylist we picked was comfortable with kid's crying. I also put a note about her sensitivities when booking the appointment.โฃ

Disability is not as black-and-white as society likes to make us believe. We've been made to believe that the only people who use wheelchairs can't stand/walk at all, and if you can walk you're being lazy or worse, faking.โฃโฃ

This belief plagued me when deciding to buy a wheelchair. I had convinced myself that if I just tried harder I could walk everywhere. But the truth is that my stroke left me with significant brain damage. My Left side is partially paralyzed and has no sensation, which means my brain barely recognizes that it is attached to my body anymore. This leads to weakness, excruciating nerve pain, balance issues, and is unsafe. โฃโฃ

Every time I use my wheelchair, and then stand up to fold it up, I have to remind myself that my chair doesn't mean I'm faking nor does it make me a failure. Using my crutch, pushing through the pain/weakness and potentially falling doesn't make me a hero either. โฃโฃ

We have to unlearn the ideas that disability "looks" a certain way and that disabled people have to conform to those ideas in order to be deemed "disabled enough."

After agonizing for months, we made the difficult decision to purchase a power wheelchair. Although I felt so much shame buying it, I had to remind myself that the voice talking was my internalized abelism.
This wheelchair is just like my crutch... a mobility aid.

- Thanks to a rigorous PT, OT, and speech therapy regimen, I have been able to regain the use of my voice, and while it still sounds a bit foreign to me, most people are unable to detect that I've had a stroke anymore. I feel so blessed that I was able to regain about 3/4 of my smile and when I laugh you can see almost all 32 of my teeth lol!โฃ

- We're hoping to FINALLY schedule heart surgery in mid to late September or early October to close the hole in my heart. โฃ

- Unfortunately, I have not regained feeling on my left side, which affects my ability to walk and type normally ( voice to text has been a game changer) My cognitive impairment has been one of the more major challenges that I have faced. My short-term and portions of my long-term memory have been significantly affected which has affected my ability to return to work as a Perinatal Therapist and Travel Content Creator. โฃ

However I'm working really hard to remedy that. Over the next couple of weeks, I'm going to be sharing content from our trip in Kentucky prior to the stroke. I could go on & on about the incredible humans over at &. When they heard about my stroke, they immediately told me to drop everything and focus on my health, and they've never once pressured me about this campaign. We loved our time in Kentucky so much and I want to be able to share all of the amazing things that we saw during our time in Lexington and the surrounding areas. So be on the lookout for that!
