Matera is a gem of southern Italy and easily reached if you are staying/travelling around Puglia. Its most recent fame comes from being a location in the opening scene of James Bond No Time to Die in 2021, but it’s been an iconic destination for many years before.
Matera, is famous for its ancient Sassi (cave dwellings) carved into limestone, making it one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited settlements, with origins in the Palaeolithic era.
Once called the “shame of Italy” due to poverty, it was evacuated in the 1950s but revived as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993 and European Capital of Culture in 2019, now featuring stylish cave hotels and rock churches.
It’s well worth a night here, particularly to take in the sunset from the neighbouring hill (easy to find following a trail of people but a steep down and up and a tricky return in the dark). But the sunset view over the town is absolutely worth it!

The coastline of Montenegro is one of the best in Europe and it is perfectly situated for incredible sunsets. Petrovac, just south of Budva, with its fortresses and beach bars turned out to be a chilled small beach town to take it all in.
The evenings here don’t get better with happy hour drinks and super fresh seafood right out of the water (prawns, octopus, you name it). Whilst Petrovac is a quiet alternative to Budva, you can still spend your evenings dining on the terrace for the towns fortress before it turns into a lounge club for the rest of the night.
Evenings on the Adriatic just hit right.

Tanzania is famous for its white sand beaches and crystal clear waters with most people taking it all in on Zanzibar island. But I decided to go a little off the beaten path and travelled south of Dar es Salaam to stay in small beach towns and beach hits where foreign tourists were few.
It was such a cool experience taking in this part of Tanzania with local people. The beaches were quiet and daily life was there to be seen from fishermen to traders.
I really hope to see more of Africa’s diverse and picturesque coastline over the years to come!

Whether it’s a weekend break or part of a travel itinerary around Sardinia, Cagliari offered a tonne from great city beaches, history, old town vibes and excellent Sardinian food and wine.
One of the best And most interesting things about Cagliari is that it’s in Italy, but feels just a little bit different. Everyone here will tell you that Sardinia stands on its own turf with its own identity.
These are just some of the highlights you can experience over a couple of days in this city.

Even in the bitter Lithuanian winter this place still has a charm to it. The town of Trakai is picturesque and its famous castle sits perched on a small island in the middle of a lake.
Trakai is home to the unique Karaite people, brought by Grand Duke Vytautas, who maintain their distinct Turkic culture, traditions, and cuisine, including their famous savory pastries, kibinai.
Whilst the medieval castle is the main attraction here, it is absolutely worth wandering around the small town and the lake paths. It’s only about one hour from Vilnius so it makes for a great day visit on the way to or from Kaunas. I could happily revisit this location, perhaps next time in the Lithuanian summer.

For most people, Macedonia means the famous Lake Ohrid or Alexander the Great. Matka Canyon is home to 10 caves, several monasteries dating back to the 1300s and extends 7km.
Today the canyon is dammed up for the creation of electricity, but throughout history the river would flood and its caves searched higher up the canyon cliffs used to act as shelters for ancient communities.
Matka is a great half day trip from the Macedonian capital of Skopje and can include a boat trip to take in scale of the canyon from the water and a cave visit. It’s a nice break for some much needed nature and away from some of the regular Balkan city hopping.

One cannot simply just drive to the volcanoes in any normal car. Instead you hop in with a local petrol-head who tries their best to gain a little air over the hills. Even better if you have a group and you can split across multiple cars and see which local has suped his Lada the most. The drive probably beats the volcanoes…

Over the year I have taken 40 flights to 12 different countries. From South Africa to Azerbaijan and Tanzania to Montenegro. 2 trips each to Italy and New York and a high of 5 times to Geneva in Switzerland. Plus two great weddings!
Each trip had a tonne of amazing moments and it is hard to compare, but a quick top 3 for the year is:
1. South Africa - my first visit (of many to come) filled with game drives, the Indian Ocean in Durban and amazing food and wine.
2. Montenegro - a gem of the Balkans with its amazing coast and water, history and lovely vibes.
3. Tanzania - perhaps one of the best coastal trips I’ve had with amazing beaches and staying in my own beach hut.
But a shout out to all the times in USA, Norway, Azerbaijan, Spain, France, Italy, Switzerland, Scotland and Ireland!
I also couldn’t have asked for the best travel buddy to share so many of them with!
And next year it will all begin with my first trip heading South Africa again.

Blackpool is a town known for being a bit of fun, and not particularly for sun (most of my visits have been in rain, wind or fog). Given it is just a short day trip from my family home, it was an impromptu decision to visit but the timing really could not have been better.
I mean, it was definitely cold…but that freezing walk along the seafront and Blackpool’s central pier helped liven us up after two straight days of festive feasting.
It might be tough times for British seaside towns these days, but they still have a charm. Whether it be for the beach, some classic bar fun or some great fish and chips they still offer plenty. Blackpool even keeps its famous illuminations on from October through to beginning of January.
But for this afternoon, a seafront walk, amazing fish and chips and that sunset made it almost feel like being abroad.
