A place that always gets me in the holiday spirit is 48 Doughty Street, the London Home of Charles Dickens. He lived here with with family from and today it’s open as a museum.
Some of the many highlights inside include:
🍽️ The Dining Room: where Dickens hosted intimate dinner parties and launched himself into the creative social circles.
🥖 Kitchen: this room would have been busy with food being prepared for the family.
🧽 Wash House Copper: in “A Christmas Carol” Dickens mentions that the Cratchit family boils their Christmas pudding in a similar copper 🎄
🎵 Drawing Room: here the Dickens family and the guests would gather for music, dancing and amateur dramatics. In this room you’ll also see his famous reading desk that he took on tour to America in 1867.
📕 Study: where you can see his desk and chair where he wrote later works such as A Tale of Two Cities and Great Expectations.

Barley Hall is a medieval townhouse that has been beautifully restored to its original splendour. The earliest part of the building dates back to about 1360, but the building was hidden under a more modern facade until the 1980s.
Today, it has been replicated to look how it would have around 1483, when it was home to the Snawsell family. It’s a great interactive experience for visitors!

A Roman bathhouse was found during renovations in the 1930s. The pub’s name was inspired by the discovery and today visitors can explore the Roman Bath Museum and learn what Roman life would have been like in York… or Eboracum as it would have been called at the time.
