And it’s worth every single step down, and every single step back up.
Bri and I did “Safari Float” in the Sarapiqui River, and spend two hours alongside our guide, Daniel, with Anhinga Tours.
We spotted mangrove swallows, two-toed sloths, green iguanas, long-nose bats, a green kingfisher, wild horses, monkeys, and perhaps most fortuitously, based on our tour company, an anhinga! (which is a large and slender waterbird).
I’ve mentioned before that I think Costa Rica is a nation that for travellers who want to focus on “being present.” This was yet another example of that. How could you not be present, what with every branch, log, and shoreline potentially being a treasure trove of natural wonder?
Attending an Alabama Football game in Tuscaloosa (especially against their Southeastern Conference rival, LSU) was a Mount Rushmore sports moment for me. Bri and I wanted to do it right.
We checked into The Alamite, a beautiful upscale boutique hotel that is located in the heart of Tuscaloosa. From there, it was straight to Alabama Vintage to get geared up for the game.
We popped by Crimson Tap House, then made our way from there down to Gallettes Tuscaloosa to test out their famous “Yellow Hammer” cocktail, which we can now confirm is an ideal way to get game ready and in the tailgating mood.
We watched the players arrive at the stadium and saw the Walk of Champions, chatted with some fine folks out tailgating, and then saw the “Elephant Stomp” at Gorgas Library with the The University of Alabama’s Million Dollar Marching Band out in full force!
The game itself was a spectacle I’ll never forget. Over 100,000 people cheering in unison, the band playing at full volume...it wasn’t just a game, it was a full fledged show.
The Crimson Tide are one of college sports most storied franchises. I didn’t take for granted that I was seeing many future NFL stars in action at Bryant-Denny Stadium.
We walked back to our hotel amongst the throngs of happy fans, and I slept with a mighty large smile that night. In the morning, we popped by Big Bad Breakfast to be alongside last night’s fans once again, and before long, we were headed back to the airport.
I’d like to think we did it right, but we couldn’t have done it right without all the people who allowed us to be fans alongside them for a day, and welcomed us into their world with the most open of arms.
Roll Tide!

The story goes that the founder, John “Big Daddy” Bishop was visited in a dream by a godlike figure who told him he had to open a restaurant for the community. At the beginning, they sold a little bit of everything, but eventually Dreamland BBQ focused on what they did best — their hickory grilled ribs. I swear you can still taste the history in every bite.
People started flocking in from all over the nation for those iconic ribs, some white bread, homemade BBQ sauce and, of course, Big Daddy’s Ice Tea (which I may have had four of, but who’s counting).
The ribs were sensational, some of the best Bri and I have ever had, but don’t sleep on the smoked sausages, either. More than the food though, it was the no frills approach that we loved here. They weren’t trying to be fancy, they simply set up a community hub where the food speaks for itself, and all are welcome.
It’s become a quintessential part of the Tuscaloosa culinary landscape. You cannot come to Tuscaloosa and not come here, period.
And to do it all the night before Bama’ took on LSU - well the atmosphere was electric.
Jose, the owner, spent much of his career working in the restaurant industry in San Jose, but eventually decided to return to his roots in CachĂ, which is a part of the Cartago Province, and get his placing rolling, some 16 years ago.
His passion for food is evident in the menu (and one of the best cups of coffee I had, from a local producer, Café Cristina). But it’s his passion for people that shined most brightly.
This sounds funny, but on some level, I don’t think I ever thought bird watching was for me, largely because I’m always taking in a million things a minute, and I never felt like I could find and/or focus on a bird when there was such a breadth of a landscape in front of me.
But in Costa Rica, with the expansive backdrop of green, and with the guidance of someone like Jose (and his incredible young colleague, Dennison), I finally felt like I “got” what bird watching was all about. Namely, it’s about being present, and not worrying about anything but that fleeting moment. I never thought I’d say this — but I loved it. I suppose I’m a bird watcher now!
We owe José A Alvarez a huge thank you for that. This whole moment was really a microcosm for the way the Bri and I would approach the rest of our time in Costa Rica, so we owe Jose and Quelitales a lot.
We saw Baltimore Orioles and Monetzumas, Tanagers and Hummingbirds, Lancebills and Sabrewings. But perhaps most importantly, we saw the perspective (and profound respect) we needed to bring along with us to fully appreciate the wonders of this nation, and its nature.
It’s known as “El Coloso,” or “The Colossus,” and when you visit, it’s easy to understand why. On a clear day, you can see both the Pacific and Atlantic Ocean from the top.
We had a touch of mist to contend with, but Bri and I felt it made it all the more awe-inspiring.
What you learn quickly in Costa Rica is that the nature here humbles you to the core. We took photos, yes, but in between those photos, you look out on the landscape, mouth agape, enveloped in a sense of wonder, and a respect for all that unfolds before you.
Here’s what we said, and how we think about “Winterpeg!” 👏❤️ ❄️
In the end, it’s not about the temperature, it’s about your attitude!
