This is a self portrait I took a few weeks ago in Utah.. I Shot the foreground before dark, and then waited till 1am to shoot the sky.
This is a STACKED/BLEND I took on Thursday Night in Utah when I was out exploring with &.. we had already been on the road since Monday and the clouds had messed up the 1st two nights of shooting thus far.. Esther and Jacob were leaving back to Vegas by this point, so Jacob dropped me off here and I spent a pleasant few hours just hanging out on a blanket, enjoying the last rays of the sun.
After we woke up I realized that I didn’t have the comp I wanted at 24mm and the Milky Way would get cut off but I think it still turned out ok, right? I sat out on that cliff for hours shooting this every way I could think of to try and make up for the previous two nights.. then around 4 took off to another location for twilight and sunrise...

The goal of this weekends adventure was to access Reflection Canyon from the water of Lake Powell in spite of the lake being too high for my ideal comp; we just wanted to go on an adventure.. the famed original photo of RC by Michael Melford was accessed by boat & not by hiking in..
I did my research &came across an access point to climb out of the lake.. I grabbed a crew of friends on a mission to explore some canyons of Lake Powell. The day was a bit cold on the lake but in the canyons we explored the weather was perfect. We hit an amazing slot canyon before gassing up at Dangling Rope marina &continuing on to Reflection Canyon. We wanted to check the place we were docking we b4 dark.
We found it easily, but the level of the lake ruined our plans! We could see the beach below the water about 5-7 ft; we couldn’t land now because of it being all rocks. I did a quick search on google maps to hopefully find another option. We headed into Hidden Canyon, one canyon prior to Reflection, landed on a sandy beach & hiked about 1.5 miles looking for any possible way to the top. We had a lot of fun exploring but w/ no success.
We decided to take the boat through RC (which I learned from last summers trip is an amazingly beautiful journey to take) &found a great area to camp in. We set up & as we were doing so I kept hearing splashing noise on the water as if someone were paddling up. Turns out the carp were spawning in the shallow beach areas of the canyon &they made noise & flopped in the shallow water ALL NIGHT LONG. I hiked down the beach a ways to try & find a comp using the interesting trees I had seen coming in.
So while this is not the expected or typical ‘Reflection Canyon’ image, it is a reflection image taken within Reflection Canyon. lit from the side by a single on the 3rd power setting manually on the cube itself.

Repost: A couple weeks ago on the 21st night of TheGreatMilkyWayChase, I was in the Mammoth Hot Springs area shooting with for the evening.. Ryan and I had shot our 1st comp then made our way to this hot spring I had been wanting to shoot for months at 3am or so... Sun was going to start coming up soon so we didn’t have much time, but the original plan was to light up the hot spring... The reflections in the still water were so good, that we ended up going this route instead.. I remember it being SOOOOOOO COLD that night that I was doing football running in place just to stay warm as my camera ran 20 images for sky and 20 images for foreground, focus stacked...
In going to post this on Instagram, I lost so much foreground or Milky Way with the crop so decided to try on Content Aware Scale she had seen using... We took a quick Richard Curtis YouTube tutorial and successfully reduced the center of the image using this technique. Swipe left to see the original image cropped for Instagram; as you can see, I removed a lot of the center of the image so I could have more milkyway and foreground in this version. Quick and easy technique!

I’ve been trying to get out to shoot almost every night since Sunday and always something came up; even when I was just in the Eastern Sierras the last couple days. So I made a huge effort to go out somewhat locally to Vegas with an image of making this arch into a Milky Way window last night. I checked the maps and knew that it was borderline possible so I headed out with my buddy at 3am, arriving around 4am to set up.. Why so late you might ask? I figured if I got there any earlier, I would be waiting in the freezing cold for the GC to show her pretty little face.. Our timing couldn’t have been more perfect though and I figured out my composition, set up my tripod, and a single (use TRACYLEE for free US Shipping) bounced off a rock off to the side and started shooting... Mikey also shot the milky way this evening using his LG phone and a tripod. I can’t wait to see how his turn out because they looked good from what I saw!!

This was from my April trip to Havasu Falls in the Grand Canyon.. The waterfalls are such a popular destination that I have been 5 times now... I don’t know if I will be going again this year but seeing as I never edited a photo from last years trip that didn’t have me in it, I decided to do so today... This was lit by a single from the right. I was with a group of 20 friends I had organized and i ended up hiking about 55 miles in 2.5 days trying to explore and shoot the Milky Way around all the falls there... Who has been here???

We tested them out in the mountains last week and they were clear as day even with part of a mountain in between us at about a mile distance. I haven’t had a chance to test them out further yet, but I can’t wait to do that!

Happy New Year! Well, we made it another year. Can’t say it was an easy one, but we haven’t seen seen any easy ones in a few years. Thank you so much for those that are supporting us; Instagram algorithm truly has done a number on engagement. Thank you to & for all your hard work!
I’ll be the first to admit that as the years have gone by my motivation for getting my photography out there has dwindled; my motivation to shoot it still exists. So I start this year with a resolution to find a happy medium, where I am shooting and editing and getting my passion out to share, but not getting burnt out like I was before.
I’ve been wanting this composition for quite some time, and I really don’t know who originally shot it. But I headed out in September which I knew would probably not be good for alignment, but it was the time that I finally motivated to get out there, so while this is a completely possible timelapse and composition, it is a composite/focal length blend with a sky I did in another location nearby. I will probably go back this spring to try and shoot it again. Thank you to my girl for heading out with me and keeping me & company as I drove the road to get these crazy car trails.
