NGL 2016 was a vibe! 🎉

I started working with as a Nike Run Club Coach! It was honestly the coolest job ever!

I got married. 👰‍♀️🤵‍♂️

We went to Europe for the first time.

I ran the 🏃🏼‍♀️

And was just getting started!

Crazy that was a decade ago! 🤯
Kind of love this little trend 🥰

OFF SEASON! Now what?!?

Here are 4️⃣ things I am working on:

1️⃣ Enjoying it! 🥰
Take advantage of enjoying other things in life and not having to get out for a long run or a workout. We cannot always be dialled in and focused, we need a break from it so we can go all in again.

2️⃣ STRENGTH! 💪💪💪
Now is the time to GAIN strength! When you are in a training cycle the focus is on maintaining strength. The more strength you gain now, the stronger you will be next season! Stronger runners are more resilient!

3️⃣ Run technique 🏃🏼‍♀️🏃🏃‍♂️
Running is a skill. Skills need to be learned and practiced. So now is the time to work on it!

4️⃣ Post race / Pre training TUNE UP!
Training and racing take a toll on our body and although we give ourselves rest, rest alone may not be enough and sometimes we need a little treatment to help!

Not sure where to start?
We can help, check us out!

Feel free to DM me with any questions!
I will be sharing more in the coming days.

Ps. Make sure you also spent some time reflecting on your race and training block 😉. We can learn so much from that and we want to make sure we put it into action the time!

Absolutely loving my pillow!
Sleep is so important (it’s the number one recovery tool) and as a busy toddler mom and marathoner I need to make the most out of all the sleep I get.

So happy to have my lagoon pillow helping me out!

Race recap 7: LOVE
This one is dedicated to the Toronto run community.
THANK YOU!
I do not think I have the words to adequately describe how amazing and special this was to me. Running through the city I live in for my first postpartum marathon was such a highlight. I cannot express how amazing it felt. I could have cried on the startline and I definitely had so many goosebumps and heart warming moments on course in the cheer stations and even in between. I do not think I have ever smiled so much in a race! 🥰

Toronto showed up! I could not be more proud to be a part of the amazing Toronto running community!
The cheer stations were obviously amazing, but I also felt like a lot of people showed up to cheer in between the cheer stations. Toronto you did good!

Huge shoutout to for emphasizing the importance of showing up & cheering. If you don’t run, you CHEER! It’s working! The energy was electric in the city!
🎉🎉🎉

I cannot thank everyone enough for all the heartfelt cheers, it truly meant the world to me and made this such a special day! 💕

The takeaway: be a part of the community, even if you train alone, show up to events, wave to people on MGT and do the local races. The community truly will carry you through when things get tough.

With that I conclude my race recap, thank you for sharing it with me.

With so much love,

Britt

PS. I know I missed some run crews/groups but can only tag 20, I appreciate truly everyone that was out cheering!

Race recap 6: The result… SHOCK
Wow, wow, wow!!!
I am still shocked by the result. The time is nothing to write home about but on the day when the conditions were not ideal it held up.
When I crossed the line Kate Vanbuskirk told me I was the third canadian and I was absolutely SHOCKED (and still am…). This was the national championship of the marathon.
I have never made a national podium.
I am 38 years old and have a 21mo child at home. Bizarre!

Obviously in a national championship not everyone is there (esp in the marathon). There are many Canadian women who are faster than me outside of this race and in this race. But on this day I was able to pull through. And although it is relatively insignificant, it means a lot to me.
When I was on the startline I literally thought to myself if this does not go well, or I do not enjoy it, this could be my last marathon (at least competitive one). So to have it go so surprisingly well is huge for me and has helped to ignite that competitive fire again, which I could not be more happy about! I was hoping for a solid effort and performance and this certainly checked all the boxes.
My time is nothing special, it is 9mins slower than my best but on a day when conditions affected many, I was able to run smart, within myself and still run close to what I was hoping (<2:40).
Given that this build was not ideal and I was adjusting to marathon training as a mom this truly means so much. Hence why I have been spending time relfecting and sharing about it. It is really easy to have a big life event and then just move on with life (I went to work the next day), so I really made a point to sit with it and reflect. This was a big deal for me and a very special day for so many reasons.
Thanks for sharing it with me.

I also got to be interviewed by Kate and go to the press conference 🤩 pictured above.

For those interested for fuel: I had a 1L of gatorade on course so probably consumed 850ml 🤷‍♀️ due to spillage and 4 gels (2 maurten and 2 caffeinated kronos) + 1 maurten gel before

The takeaway: Just keep showing up and always push to the line.

Race recap 5: BELIEVE
The last 10k there were moments when I would catch myself with my eyes on someone slowing down and so made a point to look to the next person ahead and keep moving.
In the last quarter of the race I also noticed a lot more of the elite bottles still on the table when I was grabbing my bottle. In the first half there were only a handful left on the table, so people had dropped out so, I needed to give as much as I had. I did not know where I was place wise.
As we made the turn on Queen it was 9km to go. Once I got there (33km) I felt confident I was going to be able to maintain and make it to the line. From there every kilometer I believed more and more I was going to make it. What a thrill to be proving to myself in real time I can still do this! The thing about the marathon is anything can happen especially when conditions are involved
I believe I passed one of the woman on Queen.
I passed a few more on lakeshore to put myself into the third place canadian (although I did not know).
After 35km it felt like my left calf was going to cramp so I tried to chill and not push too hard so it would calm down. Luckily it never cramped.
From there it was just push to get to the finish line. I still felt I was able to maintain and even push the effort a little in the end, which was a great feeling! Knowing I had passed a few women and so was now running scared and also of course not knowing who was still ahead of me.
There were a lot more people I recognized out cheering on the east end, more than I expected, it was an odd feeling still really taking it all in, in the last 10k of the race. I felt like I was making eye contact with everyone who was cheering.
The wind seemed to really pick up on front st, which was rude, I just wanted to get to the finish line.
I saw Mike and G again on Bay st headed to the finish line.
Overall I felt happy, relaxed and controlled throughout. I really wanted this to be a positive experience and so wanted to make sure I took in the vibes and I certainly did. Almost all of the videos and photos of me I am smiling.

Takeaway: BELIEVE in yourself and your ability to do the thing!

Race recap 4: CURIOUS
The next 10 miles.
We split from the half marathon right after the power house cheering of around 20k & we were off to the east end. I was happy I had run the second half of the course the week before so I knew where I was going and where I was on the course.
Coming through half I was just over 1:20, so I knew the sub 2:40 goal was not going to happen (I have never negative split a race in my life) but did not let it get to me and just kept pushing. I felt calm and controlled, I was working but it still felt right. It truly felt like I was headed into the unknown (in regard to how I was going to feel) in the second half. The first half of the race did go by quite fast as many people had mentioned so many things to distract you. And what a thrill to now be headed to the challenging part still in one piece. No choice but to trust myself now and see what happens.
I truly entered the second half of the marathon curious to see if I could pull this off. It had been so long and it is hard to remember the feeling of the second half of a marathon but I believed in myself and continued on.
I worked with a man for a lot of the 2nd half and kept him in my sights the whole time. The out and back on bayview was nice to see the front of the race.
My watch continued to be insane literally the entire race giving me basically no useful information except the overall time but of course my marathon math was out the window. So this truly just allowed (forced) me to run by feel.
As I got to Queen I did start to watch to see who was ahead of me. was way ahead and looking so strong, loved to see that! But there were definitely some women I would have expected to see but did not and others I would expect further ahead. I really did not think much of it and just continued to press on.
There were more people out cheering than I anticipated in this part of the race and lots that I recognized. I was still really seeing all the people that were cheering and it was just adding to how very special this all felt for me.

The takeaway: Let go and let yourself be CURIOUS as to what you can achieve.

📷
Race recap 3: TRUST
The first 10miles

On the startline, I was literally holding back tears. Some of pure joy and some of pure fear, but all of excitement.
Gun went and we were off… AHHH 42.2km no idea what is going to happen.
was pacing for a 2:37 marathon (3:43/km) and it was tempting to stay with her, but I let her go and held back a bit. My watch was insane (the whole race) so I really did not know what pace I was running but gauged off her and pulled it back.
My plan was to go through 5k ~19mins. I think I was under 18:30 at 5k, no big deal but I did actively try to pull back a bit although the pace kind of felt right and at that point I felt committed. It was as if the pace was just coming to me, so I decided to just trust it. I kept thinking my watch would calibrate but it just never did, which was maybe a blessing to not be hung up on a pace and rather just run. Afterall I was not aiming for a PB there was no pressure of making sure I was actually hitting a specific pace, this is a postpartum PB regardless.
It never felt super easy, which was fine, it does not need to be easy but it felt right. I knew I may pay the price in the last bit of the race but decided to trust myself and keep going. I classically found myself in no mans land for a lot of the race, but luckily always had people to look ahead to and honestly I do a lot of training alone, so it does not bother me.
I was so distracted by all the amazing cheering I did not take my first gel until after 10k, oops (should have been 8k). But I had been taking Gatorade from my bottles, so no big deal. It just made the math of when to take my other gels harder.
I saw Mike and Grayson at 11 and 14km which was amazing! I saw & at 9/15k. I felt like I was really able to take it all in while also being super locked into the race.
Running through all the cheers stations was the BEST I had goosebumps, it was wild.
A few men had asked me if I was running the half, which I happily replied no to them…

***Takeaway: Trust yourself & your training, listen to your body, let the pace come to you and do not force it
