We reclaimed as many suitable brick from the wall and reused them in the rebuild along with new matching brick. Lime mortar was used and mortar joints were tooled off to expose the aris of the brick.
Tight space and adverse weather made this project a battle. But if every project was in May we’d all be bricklayers and there would be no one to bake the bread, fly the planes and work the hospitals. 🙏

When you restore a facade like this everyone gets to enjoy it. It’s like a pretty front garden. The local community gets just as much from it as the person living in the house. This has been apparent from the many comments we received from locals while working here.

The original brick had hung on valiantly until was engaged to rebuild the facade, including to reestablish the main floor window, and recreate the intricate decorative elements.
We were engaged to produce period appropriate windows, to restore a beautiful stained glass transom (Anton of KMG Studio) and reproduce interior trim mouldings - thanks for your expertise. Exterior is finished with
At some point in the 20th century the facade was painted. At a later point in time around the 70’s it was sandblasted. This pitted the face of the brick and left it susceptible to deterioration. The current owner was getting tired of constantly sweeping up bits of brick that would fall off the wall. Some times they would be little bits, other times the whole face. Bricks had been replaced over the years but it was an effort in futility. It was time to do something drastic. The last resort. It was time to call in the trowel and slickers 🤯.
This facade was completely dismantled and rebuilt. We used buff coloured lime mortar and heritage style molded brick in the rebuild. During the dismantle we found that there wasn’t enough good brick to reclaim so we opted for using all new brick for the rebuild. All the plinths, rock face brick and voussoirs for the arches were custom cut on site by us. We also installed new Indiana limestone sills.

Going into it we had no idea what was behind the stucco. After removing some stucco we soon realized the brick behind was painted and not in great condition. Every single brick was carefully dismantled from the top down and the facade rebuilt using reclaimed and new matching brick. All original details were documented and recreated.
Having the opportunity to rebuild these Victorian facades is fairly unique to Toronto. The first time I ever worked on one many years ago I knew that if I could do this forever I’d be very content. It felt like I was following in the footsteps of a bricklayer 140 years ago. It was daunting. I didn’t know you could remove the brick off an entire elevation. I kept on making mistakes. I was slow. Always second guessing myself. Taking down and rebuilding yesterdays work. Now it’s second nature. I would like to think we’ve encountered and come up with solutions for all the problems that these residential Victorian facade rebuilds can throw at you. Even still something will catch you out. With experience, those things are minor.
Over the next 30 years we are going to see a tipping point in Victorian brickwork in Toronto. The majority of them need work and some of them will need to be completely rebuilt if they are to be maintained.

We used a brick from a Belgian manufacturer- on this project. We reclaimed a few hundred of the original brick and incorporated them in the rebuild.
