🖤💛❤️
Launching the phenomenal survey show of at the last night, Not a Souvenir: a life’s work of collecting and reframing the racist “Aboriginalia” of our childhoods. The work is epic, and sometimes overwhelmingly sad; beauty and horror held in perfect tension. Tony’s ongoing conversation with a past we can’t erase is generous and eventually healing. His “Margaret Preston” collages are genius. The show is a mighty achievement. I’m so proud of him. And we nailed the color scheme. ❤️ Thank you to for the strings of hearts. ❤️🔥❤️🔥 And thanks to the team at 💥

Taking over the Museum of Contemporary Art from 21 May, Tony Albert’s major exhibition ‘Not a Souvenir’, guest curated by renowned Indigenous curator Bruce Johnson, is a reclamation of sovereignty over objects that have long been reduced to commerce and caricature.

Ambitiously featuring 1000+ artworks over 400 pages, the design facilitates instead of forms with layouts that flex to serve the voice of the artist and his artworks.
The artist brief was one: to explore his own expression in type form, which for me sounds like a request for clarity in statement. The visual solution was already in his letter work that were then deconstructed for the purpose of the book, and at the same time amplify Tony’s work through letters. The letters are supported by two typefaces Roumald and Repro, and the system once again was to let words run free, to liberate rather than to redact, mirroring the artist’s pursuit in shedding light on cultural misrepresentation of Aboriginal people.
The book edges say Past, Present, Future, the confine of the topics explored inside and the materiality relies on metallic surface and ink, a contrast to Tony’s textural work and an ode to his life as an ‘Australien’.

The publication is edited by and ambitiously features more than 1000 artworks from over 20 years of Tony’s practice. Through his work, he courageously engages in difficult conversations to shed light on problematic histories and current injustices faced by First Nations people. Drawing on both personal and collective histories, his multidisciplinary practice considers the ways in which optimism might be utilised to overcome adversity.
In a week’s time, is opening a retrospective show in conjunction with the release of Tony’s monograph. Curated by and titled ‘Not a Souvenir’ the show brings together Albert’s work across sculpture, photography, installation, painting, and assemblage alongside major new commissions. The exhibition takes inspiration from the MCA’s location on Sydney Harbour at Tallawoladah and the surrounding precinct, The Rocks – a profoundly significant site of early colonial contact, now synonymous with tourism and souvenir culture. It considers the commodification and misrepresentation of Aboriginal people and culture, both historically and today, while celebrating survival and cultural pride.
